Logitech Harmony H-659 Advanced Universal Remote Control (Black) Review

Logitech Harmony H-659 Advanced Universal Remote Control (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll make this easy - the Harmony Remotes are the most brilliantly designed piece of consumer electronics I have fiddled with in a long, long time. I have a system of slghtly above average complexity - a 60" projection TV, Onkyo Home Theater receiver, Nintendo Gamecube, PC-based MP3 server (home built), and a combo DVD/VCR. The web-based configuration pretty much nailed all the settings, and the wizard is a great example of someone that did their homework when it came to figuring out all the possible "use cases" for my set up. Its probably not going to be perfect, though, unless you are using all very common components; you will probably have to tweak some of the settings. For example, after selecting the model number of my JVC combo VCR/DVD player, the standard functions worked fine, but the navigation between menus on DVDs was flakey and inconsistent - I went on the harmony web site, tweaked the settings by learning the missing commands, and voila - it works perfectly now.
OK, so why do some people give such seemingly contradictory negative reviews (definitely the minority of reviews)? I have a theory - the Harmony has no idea of what your little kids, guests, or even pets might do to the settings on your AV equipment. The Harmony can only remember the state it left things in. If your 5-year old (or your mother in law) walks up and picks up the TV remote (or goes to the front of the TV) and fiddles with the video inputs, it will throw the Harmony off (the Harmony will think it is set to "S-video" for example, but it might have been changed by your curious 4-year old to "Satellite" or something.)
But this is actually where the Harmony really shines, in my opinon - and shows how brilliant the design is. When things get out of whack, all you have to do it press the "Help" button on the remote, and it will start walking through settings and asking questions in order to determine where the problem is. In over a year of using the Harmony 659, I have yet to encounter a situation where this did not resolve the problem immediately. In fact, I used to get calls at my office from my wife, frantically trying to put in a video for the kids, but not being able to get it to display on the TV (I have it set up to display DVDs via the component connections, but VCR via the S-Video). I'm not kidding, this would happen twice a week - and I would have to walk her through all the settings on the various remotes until things were fixed. With the Harmony, this is no longer an issue - in fact, I have not had a single call in over a year about the A/V setup - that is worth the $100 alone! :-)
I'll provide an example from just this moment - I was programming a new component on the remote while my kids were watching a video. After programming the device, it assumes everything is turned off (which the system was not). My 5-year old picked up the remote, pointed it at the TV, and pushed the "off" button. Nothing happened (because the Harmony thinks things are already off. So, I just picked up the remote, hit the "help" button, and it send a command. The receiver turned off, but not the DVD player. The remote displayed a message that said "Did that fix the problem?" When I selected "No" it then asked if the DVD was off. When I selected "No" it turned it off and then asked "Did that fix the problem?" again. I selected "Yes" and now the remote and the system are back in synch. Very cool
So, the bottom line is that my 5-year old can now walk into the family room, grab the harmony by himself, and push the "watch a movie" button, stick in a video, and he is all set. It used to take assistance from an adult to turn on the TV, turn on the VCR, turn on the receiver, and then set everything to the right input, etc. In fact, my wife said to me recently "I wish you had gotten one of these a long time ago!"

A good universal remote may control an entire home entertainment system, but more often than not, it also looks like the instrument panel of the space shuttle, with dozens of intimidating and confusing keys. Enter the Logitech Harmony 659 remote, which is not only simple to program and use, but also consolidates a user's preferences for watching TV, viewing movies, or listening to music into three clearly labeled buttons. Simply press the Watch a Movie, Watch TV, or Listen to Music button to activate all the appropriate equipment--including surround sound components--and the remote does the rest. The device will automatically switch to your favorite settings for each component, while offering you a host of customized controls on its interactive LCD screen. It's called Smart State Technology, and it puts you and your family back in control of your home theater system.
The remote is an ideal choice for families with kids, though in many cases, it's the grownups that will find the simplicity most appealing. Like many other universals, the remote lets you assign tasks to individual buttons. However, unlike most other remotes, it also lets you create new functions to specifically match your component, such as when controlling multi-angle playback or zoom on a DVD player. To do this, merely connect the Harmony remote to your computer through the USB port, install the included CD software, walk through the Web wizard's step-by-step setup process, and start programming. Once you enter the model numbers of your components and answer a few easy questions about personal preferences, you'll soon be able to control a complex home theater setup without any hassles of frustrations. The Harmony 659 also includes a learning port, which picks up commands from other infrared remote controls to simplify setup even further. And should the setup process ever get too confusing, the remote includes a handy Help button that guides you through common troubleshooting steps--the only remote on the market to do so.
The Harmony 659 is compatible with everything from surround sound systems to satellite and digital cable boxes to DVD players. As a further enticement, Logitech includes two free months of TV listings. For the computer setup to work properly, users will need to own USB-equipped computers running Windows 98 SE, 2000, Me, or XP or Macintosh OS X 10.2 or later.
What's in the Box Harmony 659 remote control, software installation CD, USB cable, four AAA batteries, quick-start guide.

Cmple - REMIUM IR Extender Hidden Infrared Repeater System IR Emitters Review

Cmple - REMIUM IR Extender Hidden Infrared Repeater System IR Emitters
Average Reviews:

As I write this I am still trying to locate information on the manufacturer of this product... The instructions, all 2 pages (one sided) don't mention who makes this.
To put it simply, while there is a relatively straight forward installation process, once you use the IR repeaters to cover up the windows of your device IR receivers, good luck having an easy time getting them to function. I have a TV, sound bar, dvd player, and Cable box connected through this system. Only the cable box seems to get any sort of reliable signal... and then only to change channels.
If I find a fix for this or even the manufacturers website I will repost.

Monster High-Speed Three-Way HDMI Switch Review

Monster High-Speed Three-Way HDMI Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This device allows you to use up to three devices with HDMI outputs on a TV with just one HDMI input. It is an excellent product once you learn how to use it. There is a secret you need to get it to work though--you can't just manually switch between devices: you must use the "learn" function on the switcher with ANY remote and do that for all three inputs. (Even if you are only using two inputs.)
If you don't the device will switch between, say, your PS3 and satellite box without warning. It did that with me several times right as I was trying to do gnarly maneuvers in Grand Theft Auto IV.
Once I called customer service (it's not in FAQ on their website), and was provided that information, the device works flawlessly.
If Monster would take the time to do the manual properly or at least put the info you need to eliminate an aggravating problem on its website, this would be an excellent product.

Sony RM-AX4000 Home Theater Remote Control Review

Sony RM-AX4000 Home Theater Remote Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Added to original review on 5/11/2007. **THERE IS NO VISTA USB DEVICE DRIVER FOR THE RM-AX4000** Upgrading our home computers to Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit Edition has rendered this remote control useless.I recently purchased a RM-AX4000 to replace my existing Sony RM-AV3000 universal remote and hopefully *FINALLY* have a single unit to replace my seven currently used remote controls...
The remote control itself is well designed, has a nice display with a blue backlight, and is well built with a silver brushed metal front panel and rubber buttons.
However, the included software works reasonably well but could be a lot easier to use.
Initially I setup the unit without using the PC based software by inputing the four digit preset codes for each component. This worked but gives basic functionality and no macros (which Sony calls "XPRESS Functions").
Using the included software to configure the remote requires that you run a wizard which steps you through configuring the unit. I found that it worked better to use the preset codes rather than trying to have it learn from each individual remote.
However, once I did this and downloaded the settings to the remote, the "ALL OFF" button (which is intended to power off all of your A/V components with a single button press) stopped working properly. I have an A/V system consisting all recent model Sony components and for some reason I can't quite fathom the "ALL OFF" button powers everything off, except for the receiver. The "ALL OFF" button on the existing remote which came with the receiver works fine.
After spending two days messing around with the configuration of the RM-AX4000 I was unable to resolve this issue. Also, you must run another initial wizard in order to configure the macros. This whole process requires you to teach it, using the existing remote control for each component. This takes time, and the resulting macros needed tweaking to get them to work properly. This whole process could have been better.
After spending two days learning how to configure the RM-AX4000 using the software I have a single remote which works well......
Overall, I rate this item 3 stars because of the poorly implemented PC software.
Update - a new version of software, AX Remote Editor 1.1, is available for downoad from the Sony Website. You are now no longer forced to run the initial setup wizard !
Update II - the AX Remote Editor 1.1 software seems to run OK on Windows Vista, but THERE IS NO VISTA USB DEVICE DRIVER FOR THE RM-AX4000.

Logitech Harmony 720 Universal Remote Review

Logitech Harmony 720 Universal Remote
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This little unit may have just saved my sanity and my marriage. Trying to keep track of remotes, never mind assisting the wife and kids in using them all the time, had about pushed me over the edge. Enter the Harmony 720 at a nice discount, courtesy of Costco. My research said this had the right balance of bang for the buck for me, and so far it has proven true. The bottom line is that it just works, and works very well.
For a bit more detail, this is a very nice feeling unit, it charges fast, and holds a charge well too. Plus the rechargeable battery is replaceable, should it ever need be. The buttons are intuitive, the display is crystal clear, and it sits very well in an adult hand. It was incredibly straightforward to set-up with the downloaded software (this gets you the most recent versions of software and firmware), and abracadabra, 98% of functionality for all of my components loaded automatically using the tutorial/wizard (of note, I am a Mac User, and I found the software to be relatively easy to use - I'm certain the Windows version would be similar). I then customized the remote to add the few functions that didn't pull through automatically, using the infrared learning capabilities and programming functionality. I also was able to edit the labels of the Activities more to our liking, which I greatly appreciate. All told, I only invested about two hours in programming, and we now have one nice remote, and it runs our entire system. Whether we want to watch a DVD, play the Playstation, watch TV, use the DVR, listen to music, etc, all we need do is press one button, and all needed components power up, and the remote gives full functionality to the individual components. It could not be more simple.
I am once again looking forward to growing my system, and keeping the ease of use that I now appreciate with this remote. Comparing the available online images to my unit, it also appears that Logitech may have fine-tuned the design a bit (removing painted labels under the transport buttons that have been reported to wear off quickly), which means they are paying attention to their user base - and that's great news. About the only feature missing is RF transmission (available in the 890), but I wasn't yet ready to pay the extra bones to get that functionality. Besides, I'm certain that Logitech will soon introduce some of the same styling from this unit into their higher end products, and then I may be ready!
Logitech gets a "Great Job!" for improving on a proven Harmony product line. Do yourself (and the family!) a favor and pick one of these up.

One For All RC64RBK IRF/RF DIRECTV Backlit Universal Remote Control Review

One For All RC64RBK IRF/RF DIRECTV Backlit Universal Remote Control
Average Reviews:

Several users remark that this remote is challenging to setup. Ignore the manual that accoompanies the remote; instead, turn on your tv and the DirecTV receiver. Move the device selector switch at the top of the remote to the DirecTV receiver position. Then, press the Menu switch and toggle down to "Parental, Fav's & Setup" and press "Select". In the next menu select "System Setup" and on the next menu select "Remote". Change the "IR/RF Setup" to "RF" and continue following the menu instructions. The receiver will lead you to quickly and easily set up your new RF remote. You'll be able to change channels through walls, doors and ceilings. Use to control a receiver in a closet or cabinet.
If you want to control more than one receiver with radio frequencies, you'll need to purchase an RF remote for each receiver. But at about $25 each, this is much less expensive than running miles of wires all over your house. And you won't have to see the unsightly receivers and their accompanying wires. One For All RC64RBK IRF/RF DIRECTV Backlit Universal Remote Control

Universal Remote Control MX980 Universal Learning Remote Review

Universal Remote Control MX980 Universal Learning Remote
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own two of these remotes as well as the companion MSC-400. The first thing you should know if you are considering is this remote is NOT for the faint of heart. If you are looking for a simple setup and go type device, get something like a Harmony. But if you are a true DIY'er and good with hardware and software you will be well rewarded using a remote like this. It helps alot if you have some basic understanding of Object-Oriented Programming especially when dealing with the variables this remote is capable of.
From a hardware point of view, this remote is fantastic. It is well built, great tactile layout, and feels great in the hand. It is not touch screen which I was very thankful for since I have try them before (like the Phillips Pronto) and, after the novelty wore off, I ended up hating them. There is no replacement for hard buttons and a remote that does not need both hands to operate.
The software is what makes this thing great. The intelligence you can put behind it is phenomenal. Basically, every button is a macro. You can have them jumps from screen to screen, fire any code combination you want, and run logic. The logic comes in the form of If-Then statements, Toggle loops (kind of like a For-Next or Do-Loop), and Boolean Variables (True/False). It would be nice if it could do Integer or String type variables but I guess that would be a little too much for the average person.
A good example of how to use something like an IF statement is volume control. In my Living Room I like to watch TV with usually only sound coming from the TV but sometimes I like to do it through the Receiver. I can use the Boolean's to keep track of if the Receiver is on or not. If it is, when the user hits the Vol Up/Down buttons it remote runs an IF statement saying "If the Receiver is on (Boolean is True), turn up/down the Receiver volume, if it is false turn up/down the TV volume." This is just the tip of the iceberg in what it can do.
One thing you have to keep in mind here is that the remote does NOT come with the software. You cannot get it from URC either unless you are an authorized dealer with a login/password. There are many critics both for and against this policy (I personally do not like it) but that's that. If you buy this online, make sure they can provide you the software first if you do not already have it!

Universal Mx-880 Mx880 Macro Programming Remote Review

Universal Mx-880 Mx880 Macro Programming Remote
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are lots of universal remote controls out there from a lot of manufacturers -- all of which purport to do the same thing: Flawlessly control your multi-component, multi-manufacturer home entertainment system. What makes this remote stand out for me is that it does exactly what it is designed to do and works every time.
What this remote is: A remote control that works every time. Flawlessly. Controls my components correctly, every time.
What this remote is not: A remote control designed for you to program yourself at home with idiot-proof software.
That said, when evaluating the sticker price you should consider that the "fully loaded" cost is a lot more than the amount that shows here. To get the full value out of the remote (or any for that matter) you will need to have it professionally installed. To my knowledge, the manufacturer of this remote does not make the software to program it available to consumers.
I own or have owned Harmony 1100, Harmony One and several older 600 series remotes. They're pretty good remotes and you can program them yourself. So why the switch to the MX-880? I was controlling the same system with the Harmony 1100 and an RF extender. About 50% of the time the remote wouldn't turn the TV off when I turned the system off. Additionally, at least once a week a guest in my home or my wife would tell me that they'd "broken" the TV. In every instance the remote had failed to switch a component appropriately or something similar. Usually I could walk my wife through fixing it over the phone...but only because I programmed the remote myself and knew the logic behind the command sequences, etc. When we moved in late summer, I had a professional installer put my components into custom cabinets and had them program my Harmony 1100 -- the same problems continued. My wife commented that she wanted her little simple TV back...because at least it always worked. I emailed my installer the next AM and asked him for his thoughts and explained my problems with the 1100. He recommended the MX-880 and said that while it wasn't as flashy as my Harmony 1100 with it's touch screen that the bottom line is that the MX-880 works...every...single...time. A week in and I have to say he was spot on. After being out of town for a week I asked my wife if she'd had any problems with the remote and what she thought of it. Her response was as follows "I can't seem to make that remote NOT work....it's thing you've ever bought." While I don't fully agree that it's the best THING that I've ever bought, it is, by FAR, the best remote I've ever bought.

Universal Remote Control MX-450 Custom Programmable Remote Control with On-Screen Macro Editing. Review

Universal Remote Control MX-450 Custom Programmable Remote Control with On-Screen Macro Editing.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let's all agree that it does not require an advanced degree in computer science to program a remote control. In the case of the MX-450, neither does it require a "Professional" installer (whatever THAT means).
If you know or can figure out with a little bit or web surfing (a) which components need to be turned on and what inputs and outputs should be selected, (b) what is the difference between IR and RF, (c) what an IR emitter or blaster is, (d) what a delay is, and (e) that you need a Power Off macro to turn off all the devices in your system, you can easily program this remote. It might take a little bit of trial and error and a little bit of patience, but no more than any other "Consumer" remote control that I have seen so far.
Put another way: If you can read the directions and figure out how to program a Logitech Harmony remote at some basic level (and especially if you have already done so), you can read the directions and figure out how to program this one and probably in less time. You might have to start over again once or twice while you get familiar with the guided setup, but the step-by-step software is so simple that even a "professional" installer could probably figure it out :)
My experience: I initially owned a Universal Remote Corporation MX-900 which was installed and programmed for me by a "Professional" AV company that shortly thereafter went out of business. I was irritated at URC because they would not provide me with access to the programming software for my MX-900. They said it was for "Licensed Dealers Only" which is their way of saying "Professionals". It was a great remote, but I was no longer willing to pay somebody $300 every time I wanted to tweak the picture or add/upgrade a component (e.g., adding an XBox, swapping the DVD for a Blu-Ray, etc.) and a few things with the way mine was programmed were really irritating.
To replace that, I purchased a Logitech Harmony 900 and had the exact experience as everyone else who purchased it did: bad RF range and performance. I tried every creative workaround you could think of, to no avail. If the RF worked, it would be a great remote. But it doesn't.
URC adveritizes this remote as being for "Professionals", which initially scared me off, but the cool thing about the MX-450 for the DIY folks like me is that, since you don't need a PC, there is no software required to program the remote.
Correcting some previous reviews, URC offers for download from its web site support section a helpful Archiver program that allows you to update the remote firmware and ir codes database via a USB cable -- just like the Harmony remotes, but much simpler. It also allows you to make a backup copy of your remote configuration in case you have a problem later on and need to do a factory reset or restore your settings. (For the non-pros like me, I strongly recommend making multiple backups along the way as you add more and more cool macros and other programming.)
In my case, I spent about an hour surfing through the internet reviews and reading the 12 page manual before I took the thing out of the box. It probably took me another 4 hours in total to program the remote over the course of one evening. That includes my Denon AVR receiver, my Sony TV, my Sony Blu-Ray player, my AppleTV, my Xbox, my HDRadio and my wife's Wii Fit (all hidden in the next room and connected to our whole-house audio system). I used the macro feature to create six macros on the Main page that emulate Harmony-style "Activites" -- e.g., to watch Tivo, you press the "Watch Tivo" button and the remote does the rest. Favorite channels can be done in under 10 minutes. It probably took me another half-hour to install the IR emitters, the base station and the RF antenna and do the RF programming on the remote to make each component RF only with its own ir address. BTW, the URC manual for the MRF 350 base station is really easy to follow and the RF settings on the remote itself are self-explanatory.
The guided programming is not as elegant as what you can do on a PC, and I had to start programming devices or macros over again once or twice, but the learning, macro and cut and paste functions are really helpful and easy. You can do just about anything that you can think of with this remote so long as you are a little bit organized. My unit gives me RF range to almost 100 feet through two interior walls and the performance has been reliable, even during long macros.
I highly recommend this as an alternative to other high-end RF remotes for DIY folks like me.

Sony RM-AV3000 Universal Remote Control with Touch-key LCD Screen Review

Sony RM-AV3000 Universal Remote Control with Touch-key LCD Screen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Does is work? Yes. Does it look cool? Yeah, if you appreciate the similarity to a Starfleet "PADD" (and don't mind that it's half the size and weight of your laptop). Does it replace all your other remotes? Probably. Am I glad I bought it? Well, I suppose...
There are four basic problems in addition to the size. The first is that despite the perhaps-cool similarity to all those touch-screen manipulations you see on Star Trek, you're likely to wish you were pressing real buttons (with real tactile feedback) rather than a little part of the screen that says "power." And the real buttons that ARE present have no backlight.
The second major drawback isn't actually an issue with this universal remote as much as with the equipment we want it to control. Most home theater equipment just isn't ready to deal with the "macro" commands an AV3000 owner would likely want to program -- for example, turn on the amp, set it to DVD, turn on the DVD player, set it to wide-screen and set the volume to -5 dB, turn on the TV, wait 4 seconds for it to wake up then set it to Input #5 with wide screen mode, etc. The AV3000 allows you to do A LOT of this, but there's no way to program in discrete codes (e.g., turn ON, rather than toggle On/Off) unless you already have another remote that can transmit these. This means you end up programming functions for various but similar scenarios, such as play a DVD when the DVD player is already on, play a DVD when the TV is already on but the DVD is off, etc.
Third, the manual is just awful. It's pretty big, and there's an index (though the index fails to list a number of important topics), but the information is presented in a most inefficient and confusing manner. Owners of other Sony products will be familiar with this, unfortunately. If it weren't for the folks at remotecentral.com, I never would have learned a number of important procedures.
Finally, my unit (and others, from what I've read online) is extremely sensitive to lighting conditions when "learning" from another remote. When the lights are on, the unit gives a certain error message (five beeps), leading the user to look up the "five beeps" message in the manual. There you read a number of suggestions which don't apply, but nothing about turning off the lights. I spent at least four hours tracking this down. Ugh!

Terk Leapfrog Remote Control Extender Kit LFIRX Review

Terk Leapfrog Remote Control Extender Kit LFIRX
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the Terk Leapfrog to control my Tivo from the bedroom, after running cables for the audio/video through the wall. In the end, this has worked excellently for me - so let me explain why it doesn't get the full 5 stars.
Initial setup with this product couldn't be easier. You simply unpack the two pieces, plug in the two included AC adapters - and that's it! I was surprised there was no programming it to accept certain IR codes... it just picks up whatever the remote might be throwing out, and relays it appropriately. When I first unpacked it, I set the one unit right in front of my Tivo, sitting about 2 inches from the Tivo's IR receiver. I took the other one into our bedroom and plugged it in. Presto - I could control the Tivo from the bedroom.
Now that I'd confirmed it worked, I went back to my living room to try and find a nice, out of the way place for the Terk Leapfrog to sit. It obviously had to have a clear line of sight to the Tivo... which I figued left me with plenty of choices. I tried putting it on a bookshelf, that was on quite an angle from the Tivo - but with no luck. I tried hiding it behind a picture frame (where is still had a clear line of sight to the Tivo) on a table that was closer to the Tivo... but again no luck. I went on to try 4-5 other places around the room, but could never make it work consistently.
Finally, I placed it *behind* the tivo, and used the included IR 'extender' (which is a little cable, with a peanut sized IR transmitter on the end). I snaked this little cord under the tivo, and then attached the little IR transmitter so it's aiming right at the Tivo's IR reciever. This, finally, worked. Just for comparison, I can aim my Tivo remote almost anywhere in the room and have the signal picked up by the Tivo, so I'm confident that the Tivo is not the problem here.
So... The good thing about this product is that it does work... the bad thing is that it seems it needs to be aimed by a professional sharpshooter to get the signal to your device.
Pros:
-Super fast setup
-Works great with your Tivo
Cons:
-Hard to get the 'placement' of the IR sender just right.

Sony RMVLZ620 Remote Control Up To 8 Compatible Video Components (Black) Review

Sony RMVLZ620 Remote Control Up To 8 Compatible Video Components (Black)
Average Reviews:

I am very pleased with my Sony RMVLZ620 remote. It automatically controlled my Sony DVD player without any programming at all, and picked up all functions of my 10-year-old JVC TV and my ANCIENT Quasar VCR (for kids' videos) with codes in the manual. I did have to program the remote to control my Panasonic CD changer/stereo, my antenna tuner box, and my video input switch which sends video from all of those devices to the one input on my TV. However, once I figured out the one missing step in the manual (see below), programming every button on the remotes of those devices took less than 10 minutes. I also created macros to turn on all relevant devices at the same time depending on what I want to to (watch TV, DVD, VHS, or listen to a CD) using the four numbered System Control buttons.
In the manual, pages 20-22 provide the instructions to program the learning functions of the remote to teach it how to control devices that do not already have a program code. Step number 5 says to press the button on the RM-VLZ620 that you want to teach. What it doesn't say is how long you have to press it. This might just be a quirk of my particular remote but after some trial and error I discovered that I have to press and hold this button for about a second before releasing it or the Sony remote won't properly receive and save the signal from the original remote in step 6. This was frustrating for me at first but once I figured it out, I had absolutely no trouble at all programming the Sony with functions from every infra-red device that I tried.

X10 POWERMID Remote Control Extender Kit PM5900 Review

X10 POWERMID Remote Control Extender Kit PM5900

(More customer reviews)
MY father recently remodelled his home, and had all the electronics hard wired behind the walls. It's a real clean installaltion, however all the equipment (reciever, cable, DVD, CD etc) are all out of infrared range.
After figuring out he needed a universal remote, as well as needing r/f capability, the search was on for his christmas present. I had a lot of trouble finding a universaal remote that would set up easily for him, has well as have the R/F capability.
In the end, i opted for the infrared remote i really wanted, and the x-10 system. the leapfrog system appeared to have a few bad reviews, and i figured spending the extra money might make the difference (only like $10)
Turned out to be a great decision. I was concerned about the system b/c the front of all the components in the media closet are very close to the door. I purchased 2 extra extender eyes (plug into the back of the R/F recieving unit, and can be stuck right on the I/R eye of your component) but i didn't even need them. One pyramid in the closet ssomehow still controls all the componants w/o even being in direct line of sight of the i/r eye on each piece of equipment.
I would reccomend buying an extra transmitter (the pyramid w/o the antenna) as you might want to be able to control from other places once you see how convenient this is. My dad has 2, one in the living room, and one in the kitchen, if he wants to control music while cooking.he'll probably end up with another for the patio outside during the summer months.
overall, highly reccomended product.

Acoustic Research ARRX18G XSight 18-Device Universal Learning Remote Control with Touchscreen Color Display Review

Acoustic Research ARRX18G XSight 18-Device Universal Learning Remote Control with Touchscreen Color Display

I had researched high-end universal remotes for a week or two prior to settling on this one. Amazon was selling it for $149 which was $100 off of the local retailer's price. I also purchased the IR extender for around $60 from Amazon. The packages arrived and I opened them and had the extender plugged in, the remote turned on and programmed to my TV, Blue Ray, and cable box within 5 minutes. It was that easy using the on-remote touch screen programming functions without even getting the instruction manual out of the box.
I did get the manual out later that evening to us my PC to finish programming all of the more advance functions. That process too was pretty simple. I spent around 45 minutes adding in 60 favorite channels, creating favorite channel profiles for myself, my wife, and son. I also created 3 different sequence activities like watch TV, Watch a movie, and turn off and on every component in the system.
I had recently purchased an inexpensive IR repeater with a IR sensor that sat below the TV and had a 10 cord running into my AV cabinet. It was very inconsistent and frustrating. This remote along with the RF/IR repeater worked perfectly and needs no sensor sitting anywhere visible. Everything is sitting behind closed cabinet doors and the remote works from just about anywhere in the entire house perfectly every time without delay.
This remote is the bee's knees.

Logitech Harmony IR Extender System (Black) Review

Logitech Harmony IR Extender System (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am using this IR extender with various remotes and am very happy with the performance. But my road to satisfaction had a bump I can help you avoid. I, like most folks, like to test things out to see if they work before I invest much time in installation. Installation is minimal in this case, just running some wires and making room to plug the device in on a pretty full UPS, but I wanted to test it out none the less. So I plugged everything in, moved the receiver around the corner, pointed the stylish blaster at the devices (an ATT Uverse box, TV and DVD player) and .... nothing happened. Added a mini blaster and ... I got very erratic transmission. Moved them closer, farther away ... still awful performance. I could see the lights responding on the blaster. I read the instructions again, which are very brief because the product is so simple, and still could not figure it out.
So, I called Logitech support, got escalated a level and then got an answer to my blunder. I am now appropriately humbled. I was pointing the shinny rounded edge toward the electronics. It is the side with the wires coming out that needs to be pointed in the general direction of the devices to be controlled. It makes total sense for when you install the blasters. They were designed to sit on a shelf slightly in front of any equipment with their wires extending toward the back of the shelf. But, when I was testing from in front of the equipment, I did not think to turn the blaster around so the side with all of the wires attached was pointing at the electronics.
Once over this bump in the road I created, the product worked well with all of my remotes. Of note, the IR receiver - the only part that sits out in the open - has a cord that is 8 feet in length and ends in what looks just like a 3.5mm audio jack. That should cover most applications. However, if additional length is needed, a headphone cord extender would fit - I just do not know of the signal would travel the additional length.
