SMC EZ-Stream Wireless Audio Adapter. ( SMCWAA-B ) Review

SMC EZ-Stream Wireless Audio Adapter. ( SMCWAA-B )
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After rsearching for several weeks various of the wireless digital devices, I focused on the SMC SMCWAA-B EZ Stream. Looking soley for a device to 'pull' my music (no video, etc) to my living room from my PC, I wanted something inexpensive, compact, WMA (version 9) capable, and able to stream internet radio. Though there are no reviews of the EZ Stream, I spotted one on Ebay and in two days (a first) held in both hands a slightly used EzStream (for $59 including shipping; they seem to be available new for around $110.)
The only other unit I might have considered would have been a Apple Airport Express, which requires iTunes and can't play (but will import) WMA's.
Happily after an hour of only mildly tedious configuration, the Ez Stream began delivering music to my living room stereo under the control of a handy but fairly small-buttoned remote.
I'm very satisfied with just a few niggles. SMC has great product and if they take care of a few things, they'll have a home run.
The device itself has a cheezy feel and look. Think 'cheap and cheerful' and you'll have the right picture. While the 'Steam would look fine next to most pieces of office computer equipment, it looks strangely cheap and out of place in a living room. The unit has a blue screen that also looks a tad down-market, though it's the case itself that could use the most attention.
More seriously, the manual is poorly organized and rather light on instruction. If you aren't technically savvy, I'd forget about the EZ Stream. Then again, what technically impaired person would be interested in such a device?
I use a wireless network with WEP enabled and this proved tedious to resolve. Along with Musicmatch the unit ships with a "utility" for the device itself. The setup didn't mention when to use the utiltiy -- in fact it would have made configuring the WEP security much easier. Either way, I had to guess at whether my WEP key was HEX or ASCII and whether it was 64 or 128 bit. I was able to deduce which setting was correct only because my KEY is 26 digits and so is the HEX 128 setting.
And then there's Musicmatch... I really wish the unit could use Windows Media Player. I've submitted to now having yet another music management software on my computer. Specifically I also own an iRiver IHP120 which allows music to be stored and accessed by folder. I consider this by far the easiest way to access music. And while Musicmatch will allow you to browse your music by folder while on the PC, the EZ Stream only uses the Artist, Album, Genre modality -- which leaves me in TAG HELL. The only other device that could handle folder based music organization was the CD30 C series -- but that presently won't work with WMA9's.
I have the unit set up probably less than 20 feet from the AP and every now and then it cuts out. For some reason the signal strength isn't that great and may have more to do with the construction of our house and the Linksys AP than the SMC.
I'd also love to have several EZ Streams set up through the house, which you can do -- however I don't think there's a way to synchronize them and emulate 'whole house audio.'
And lastly, SMC seems to exist ephemerally: their web site isn't very up to date, and you can't download a copy of the manual before buying. Also, there's no user forum -- always the best support a product can have. And oddly, as of July, 2004 there isn't a single review by say PC Magazine or any of the tech web sites; the device was announced in January 2004!
The digital audio receiver market is in its infancy. No doubt this market will mature significantly in the next few years. In the meantime, the SMC Ez Stream does what it's intended to do with little fanfare and at a low price.

Yamaha HTR-5860 XM-Ready 7.1-Channel A/V Surround Receiver (Black) Review

Yamaha HTR-5860 XM-Ready 7.1-Channel A/V Surround Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

I have a beef with the remote on this unit. All remotes included with units above entry level must have learning capability. This remote, sadly does not.
The quality of the reciever is pretty good. It seems well built. The front control panel is well placed and the rear jacks are intuitively placed. The volume increases and decreases in TINY increments....which is a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it. The e-z setup was pretty easy to do. The on-screen programming is also nicely presented. I can tell no difference in the up-convert function to component. The input switching which is carried out through the receiver is excellent...when you change inputs (DVD, TIVO, CABLE, ETC), it automatically changes inputs on your TV....this is a nice function if you have a spouse who can never remember which input to switch to to watch a movie!!
Overall, I wish this receiver had HDMI jack to upconvert to highest quality signal...you will find this on the top-of-the line units. I'm pretty pleased with this purchase, given the low cost offered by Amazon with free shipping. If you are looking for an upgrade to your home theater, give this unit a shot.

Monster Cable DVI400-1M DVI-D Video Cable Review

Monster Cable DVI400-1M DVI-D Video Cable
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this MonsterCable DVI cable to connect my DVD player to my new HD TV. I was certainly impressed with the image quality and the sturdiness of the cable, though honestly I found the connector pins a bit finicky.
Soon my HD system grew and I needed a way to better utilize the Sony TV's single DVI input, so I bought a very nice Geffen 4 port remote controlled DVI switch. It came packaged with 4 rather generic 6' DVI cables, which I used to connect the components to the switch, saving the MonsterCable for the switch's output to the TV.
The result was great in all cases. That's when the scientist in me took over. I started swapping cables like mad, and asking any poor soul who happened to be around to identify the best picture. The result? No one, myself included, could discern the least little difference in image quality from cable to cable.
Being that the generic DVI cable is one fourth (!) the price of the brand name, obvious questions about diminishing returns are raised.

If You Want the Best HDTV Picture You Need A Digital Video Connection Whether you're watching the ball game or an action-packed movie in high definition, without question, the picture quality is stunning. It could be better, though. For high definition all-digital video to look its best, the data must be transferred from your set top box or DVD player to your HD display in pure digital form. Unfortunately, this can't occur with analog video cable. Even high resolution component video is still an analog connection! In order for component video, or any other analog cable to do its job, your HDTV tuner, DVD player or other digital source must convert video data from the digital domain to analog, then back to digital. This conversion process can cause high frequency attenuation, and loss of resolution and detail. Introducing Monster DVI 400: The Highest QualityAll-Digital Video Interface Monster DVI400 is a pure digital high bandwidth video interface. What you see on your screen is exactly what was digitally transmitted. DVI400 is designed to support the high bandwidth demands from your set top box to the HDTV display. DVI400 supports up to 24-bit digital RGB data behind each pixel for thehighest quality image. You'll enjoy a razor sharp picture with incredible detail and vibrant, natural colors, even if you're forced to use long cable runs. Get Monster DVI 400 for HDTV and See What You've Been Missing You paid a lot extra to enjoy the benefits of digital source material (DVD/HDTV) and a digital display device (Plasma/High Def.). Why limit the performance of these cutting edge technologies by connecting them with less than the highest quality digital interface? Monster DVI400 helps you get all the performance you paid for!

Bose Companion 3 - 2.1-channel PC multimedia speaker system - black, silver Review

Bose Companion 3 - 2.1-channel PC multimedia speaker system - black, silver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have recently purchased the Bose Companion 3 2.1 speakers, and after listening to them cranked up on some rock music yesterday, I was disappointed. It brought to mind what many folks have been saying about these suckers. I want to voice the cons first however...
I must have read 20 reviews before I bought them, and have read 30 or so since after listening to them. It is absoulutely true that the speakers sound tinny when playing loud, powerful music up close. I am sticking to jazz and easy music while at my computer because of this limitation. However, if you step a few feet away though regardless of what you're listening to, you will notice your room completely filled with well-imaged sound. Also you have to place the satellites as far apart as possible (like any other Bose speaker--they're designed that way, duh) The midrange can be non-existant, but for the price what do you expect? The connectors on the satellites need work, because they are not designed well, but you shouldn't be rough-housing around your computer anyway, so whatever...
Over time the disjunct between the sub and the tinny satellites can and will get tiring especially at loud volumes up close, but that can be EQ'd out (even a month later--to this day, I'm constantly playing with the EQ!). The sub is the most pleasant surprise for the clarity of it's output and accuracy; it is truly impressive. I didn't think I'd get this much deep, true bass. The 'puck' volume control wheel is awesome, one tap and it mutes, plus you can put the volume exactly where you want it. For the overall size of the components, the clarity is impressive and they crank!!!
Do not believe any reviews from these idiots that tell you that these speakers are absolute garbage. Anybody who is only willing to devote a mere 250.00 to ANY speakers, and calls themselves a true audiophile is insane, so don't bother listening to them. I have to say this, for what I paid for them right out of the box, I couldn't be happier, overall. For a home speaker system for any one who is serious about 'audiophility' (I made that up), they should be willing to come out of pocket for around a 1000.00, period. Bottom line is you get what you pay for. The fact that I paid less 185.00 for my Bose Companion 3 2.1 right out of the box (no they weren't stolen--employee discount) only sweetens the deal for me, but when I think about what I've paid for high-end bookshelves, even the 250.00 seems paltry for what you get. Incidentally, I'm not a Bose guy, I like JBL's and Canton audio speakers. However, these Bose are impressive so please don't believe these 'cheapos' who want 3,000.00 worth of sound for 250.00--it'd be nice, but it just ain't gonna happen. Overall your getting you money's worth with these, and then some. This is the first review I've ever written, and I'm a fairly literate guy, but I felt compelled to clear the air on this. Please take this for what it's worth and shell out your 250.00 for these (or less with a hook-up), because they are a worthy, and truly impressive upgrade.

Sony TDM-IP1 Digital Media Port iPod Dock Review

Sony TDM-IP1 Digital Media Port iPod Dock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I work from home and listen to an iPod quite a lot. Recently, I purchased a Sony Home Theater System (model DAV-HDX 500). Initially, I connected my iPod to the Sony via the ubiquitous Apple iPod cradle; however, controlling the iPod manually got old in a hurry.
The unit came equipped with an attached digital media port cable, which connected directly to the Sony receiver's DMPort. A separate video cable was supplied, which I connected directly to the TV's video-in RCA connector. The unit can also be used with a separately purchased video cable connected between the receiver and TV.
Setup was very simple and after I configured my Sony receiver to "DMPort1" and the TV to "AV1", a facsimile of the iPod's screen appeared on the TV and I was able to control the iPod by way of the Sony remote.
Visually, the menu is a little on the chunky side, but highly legible. Screen color may be set to Red, Green, Blue, and a couple variants of Gray. There are also modest on-screen controls for a screensaver, song shuffle, and song repeat.
The only moving part on the TDM-iP1 is a button, which allows users to switch between the iPod's own controls and control by way of a remote control.
The TDM-iP1 does charge the cradled iPod. This, however, may be the unit's major weekness, since the AV system must be powered for charging to occur. A separate power input would have been a nice touch.
At present, the Sony TDM-iP1 is selling for just under $100. In time, I would think the cost might drop to about $50, which is what I believe it's worth, despite its functionality and appearance. The unit's high price is why I've given it four stars; otherwise, the Sony TDM-iP1 functions as advertised.
As an aside, the Logitech Harmony 520 remote control can be configured quite nicely to control a TDM-iP1 by way of the Sony DAV-HDX 500. Nothing like one remote for all your audio and video components.

Panasonic SC-BT300 1250W 7.1 Channel Blu-ray Disc Home Theater Sound System Review

Panasonic SC-BT300 1250W 7.1 Channel Blu-ray Disc Home Theater Sound System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, this system can get L-O-U-D! It will be perfect in a standard household/apt and I would even say it could fill up a large living room with ease. I don't even have the sub turned all the way up in fear of getting a noise complaint. That's a good thing.
The system offers a lot of dynamic sound settings. Here are some of a few:
HEAVY - added bass/good clarity
CLEAR - More Treble/less bass
FLAT - All levels straight across
SOFT - More subdued/less treble/a little bit of added bass
The system also has a couple of Easter eggs that I was not expecting. There is a nice feature of being able to "re-master" the sound of any Blu-Ray/DVD to give it the user more control over the specific sound they want to hear. Additionally, one can manipulate the visual aspect to create a more refined picture.
The down side is that the system offers a limited amount of inputs, but in its defense, it is not a standalone receiver. The good thing is that it offers two optical inputs which can easily accommodate your XBOX/PS3/Wii and you Cable/Satellite TV receiver.
There is a nice smart setup feature which calibrates your sound from a specific device. In my opinion it worked quite well and the levels were automatically adjusted.

Extra features include the IPOD adaptor which has been done well and easily allows the user to access the IPODs songs/playlists etc. There is also a SD card which can play pictures/video files. The speakers are wireless capable.
Ultimately, I am a stickler for being able to manipulate every aspect of the sound/video to make my experience the best it can be. This system does not offer every little nuance, but for the money it comes pretty darn close with a lot of extra features. Most importantly, I have been quite impressed with the sound and visual clarity of the system and have been quite pleased with the purchase. Give it a look!!

HDTV is easy. Home-Theater sound systems used to be hard but Panasonic has made it easier than pie (ready-made pie). Blu-ray extends beyond HDTV in sound. HDTV has 5.1 channel ability but Blu-Ray offers 7.1 channels. The SC-BT300 boasts seven speakers to envelop viewers in a remarkably true-to-life surround sound experience. The front and center channel speakers are made with a bamboo diaphragm which provides a tightly intertwined fiber to deliver greater rigidity and accuracy, resulting in clear reproduction of sounds over a wide frequency range, from massive explosions to metallic clangs. The subwoofer features a Kelton system with a dual diameter structure to deliver a deep powerful bass. The Smart Set-up guide uses the help of GUI navigation to allow users to set up their SC-BT300 home-theater system for optimum performance. The result is being able to stay at home while enjoying a thrilling, incredibly lifelike audio performance that rivals a movie theater. The appeal of Panasonic Blu-ray products goes beyond the breathtaking pictures and sound; the networking functions open the door to new kinds of entertainment fun. The SC-BT300 can connect to the Internet for downloading bonus content available with Blu-ray Discs and for playing Internet games via BD-Live. This connectivity is further enhanced with the addition of VIERA-Cast. VIERA-Cast integrates the Amazon Video-on-Demand (VOD) online movie rental service. We purchased this unit to replace a similar one damaged by UPS in shipping. (Always buy the insurance!)
We're very happy with the sound quality. The XM ready feature was a huge help. The damaged unit didn't have that capability and it made listening to our xm much easier with the plug and play feature.
Hooking up any piece of electronic equipment is a pain, and my only comment is to ask if there's some way to make it simpler?? I'm a fair techno-geek, but it took me most of one day to get everything connected and working.

Take the next step in home theater performance with the Yamaha HTR-5990 digital surround receiver, which boasts 7.1 channels (140 watts x 7) of amplification and a ton of high-end features. The receiver is built around Yamaha's digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design concept, which maximizes digital signal quality and minimizes analog circuitry to ensure the best possible sound. ToP-ART receivers include such defining attributes as ultra-high-current amplification, high-performance 192 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters, an upgraded Pure Direct listening mode that provides terrific signal purity, and an impressively wide frequency range of 10 Hz to 100 kHz that helps digital audio sources like DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD reach their full potential.
Movie buffs will dig the HTR-5990's Tri-Field/Quad-Field Cinema Digital Sound Processing (DSP), Yamaha's means of simulating the acoustics of a stadium, concert hall, or intimate club in the comfort of your own home. The Tri-Field system projects three sound fields into the home theater--a "presence" field in the front and two "surround" fields in the left and right rear speakers, resulting in a powerfully realistic 3-D soundscape. To amp it up even further, listeners can select the Quad-Field function, which adds an additional rear surround field. Quad-Field is ideal for newer 6.1 and 7.1-channel formats.
The Cinema DSP's 19 surround programs include two-channel video modes such as Spectacle, Sci-Fi, Adventure, and General, each of which creates an optimum sound field for a specific movie genre; multichannel modes for Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS, DTS ES, DTS 96/24, DTS 96/24 ES, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx formats; and a host of other options for movies, music, and video games, including five THX Select 2 programs custom designed for small- to medium-sized home theaters. Also featured is Silent Cinema, Yamaha's exclusive technology that lets you enjoy multichannel music or movie sound through ordinary headphones without sacrificing surround-like sound.
As with the best home theater receivers, the HTR-5990 is capable of HDMI and component video up-conversion. This function takes S-video and composite signals and converts them into HDMI/component signals to ensure the highest-quality picture on your HD monitor from any source. No more switching inputs according to which source you're using--rather, they can all go through the same HDMI/component connection. The receiver also offers the ultra-convenient Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer (YPAO), which employs an optimizer microphone at the listening position to pick up test tones from your speakers. The HTR-5990 then analyzes the test tones to let you know which speaker configuration is best. It's like having a professional audio engineer tweak your system.
What really makes the HTR-5990 special, however, is its number of high-end functions, such as the 480i to 480p de-interlacing, the superior multi-zone control for listeners with multi-room speaker systems, the assignable amplifiers for users who want to create bi-amped speaker connections, and the pair of HDMI inputs for high-quality digital audio and video data handling. Plus, the HTR-5990 not only includes a standard AM/FM tuner, but it's also XM satellite radio ready, making it fully compatible with any separately sold XM antenna.
Additional features include an accurate touch-volume control, an enhanced dialogue mode for movies, a selectable nine-band subwoofer crossover, a night listening mode that helps you clearly hear all the surround programs at low volumes, and a full-function learning remote control.
With a bevy of digital and analog inputs, the HTR-5990 can accommodate a ton of digital sources such as DVD players, CD players, video game consoles, digital satellite systems, and much more. The rear panel options include the aforementioned pair of HDMI inputs and one output, four optical digital audio inputs and two outputs, two coaxial digital inputs and one output, three component video inputs and one output, five S-video inputs and three outputs (two assignable), five composite video inputs and three outputs (two assignable), and four analog audio inputs and two outputs. Also present are a 5.1 multichannel input, a full 7.1 surround pre-out, and a set of front-panel A/V inputs for quick connections.
The HTR-5990 measures 17.1 by 6.7 by 16.7 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a two-year warranty.
What's in the Box HTR-5990 receiver, remote control, four AAA batteries, power cable, speaker terminal wrench, optimizer microphone, AM loop antenna, indoor FM antenna, user's manual.

Sherwood RD-8601 6.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver with Dolby Digital and DTS Decoding Review

Sherwood RD-8601 6.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver with Dolby Digital and DTS Decoding
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just set this unit up there are a few things that are different than the description, one being that there are 2 optical digital inputs and 1 Coaxial digital input and there is 1 digital optical output and 1 Coaxial digital output. That's fine with me as I would rather have more digital optical inputs if you actually could read the back of the unit in the picture you would see that I am correct. Setting the surround sound feature with the mic is awesome, I love this gadget. The only real issue that I have is that the unit I received does not have the Sherwood name anywhere on the product/ box or manual what it does say is QG-500AVR SLS I did find that the QG stood for quick gold but not sure about the rest as of yet I am still researching it. The remote was made for someone who works for Nasa but I was able to figure out the things that I needed to use, I still have a ton to learn about the remote. I did hook up the unit and it was very easy and has great sound, but I only use the optical inputs so I don't know the sound of the rest of the inputs. I only have 5 speakers and one sub set up so I can only use the 5.1 speakers but I have another speaker on the way so that I can hook it up to use the 6.1, when I do I will update my review again.
*********UPDATE*********
Here is the responce that I got from the company on the Name not being Sherwood:
Thank you for your Amazon order.
This SLS branded receiver is a Sherwood RD-8601 receiver, it is rebranded with an SLS name. It is exactly the same as Sherwood RD-8601 except for the logo.
SLS is a high end audio company who contracted Sherwood to build these receivers for them to sell as a home theater package. You can see this home theater package here : [...] LineHomeTheater
We have no control over the pic on Amazon, it is just a listing, our listing does state that this is a rebranded receiver. We have sold hundreds and all our customers are very happy with the quality, especially seeing the low price they paid.
Let us know if you need additional assistance, we will be happy to help.
Best regards,

Universal Remote Control MX-450 Custom Programmable Remote Control with On-Screen Macro Editing. Review

Universal Remote Control MX-450 Custom Programmable Remote Control with On-Screen Macro Editing.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let's all agree that it does not require an advanced degree in computer science to program a remote control. In the case of the MX-450, neither does it require a "Professional" installer (whatever THAT means).
If you know or can figure out with a little bit or web surfing (a) which components need to be turned on and what inputs and outputs should be selected, (b) what is the difference between IR and RF, (c) what an IR emitter or blaster is, (d) what a delay is, and (e) that you need a Power Off macro to turn off all the devices in your system, you can easily program this remote. It might take a little bit of trial and error and a little bit of patience, but no more than any other "Consumer" remote control that I have seen so far.
Put another way: If you can read the directions and figure out how to program a Logitech Harmony remote at some basic level (and especially if you have already done so), you can read the directions and figure out how to program this one and probably in less time. You might have to start over again once or twice while you get familiar with the guided setup, but the step-by-step software is so simple that even a "professional" installer could probably figure it out :)
My experience: I initially owned a Universal Remote Corporation MX-900 which was installed and programmed for me by a "Professional" AV company that shortly thereafter went out of business. I was irritated at URC because they would not provide me with access to the programming software for my MX-900. They said it was for "Licensed Dealers Only" which is their way of saying "Professionals". It was a great remote, but I was no longer willing to pay somebody $300 every time I wanted to tweak the picture or add/upgrade a component (e.g., adding an XBox, swapping the DVD for a Blu-Ray, etc.) and a few things with the way mine was programmed were really irritating.
To replace that, I purchased a Logitech Harmony 900 and had the exact experience as everyone else who purchased it did: bad RF range and performance. I tried every creative workaround you could think of, to no avail. If the RF worked, it would be a great remote. But it doesn't.
URC adveritizes this remote as being for "Professionals", which initially scared me off, but the cool thing about the MX-450 for the DIY folks like me is that, since you don't need a PC, there is no software required to program the remote.
Correcting some previous reviews, URC offers for download from its web site support section a helpful Archiver program that allows you to update the remote firmware and ir codes database via a USB cable -- just like the Harmony remotes, but much simpler. It also allows you to make a backup copy of your remote configuration in case you have a problem later on and need to do a factory reset or restore your settings. (For the non-pros like me, I strongly recommend making multiple backups along the way as you add more and more cool macros and other programming.)
In my case, I spent about an hour surfing through the internet reviews and reading the 12 page manual before I took the thing out of the box. It probably took me another 4 hours in total to program the remote over the course of one evening. That includes my Denon AVR receiver, my Sony TV, my Sony Blu-Ray player, my AppleTV, my Xbox, my HDRadio and my wife's Wii Fit (all hidden in the next room and connected to our whole-house audio system). I used the macro feature to create six macros on the Main page that emulate Harmony-style "Activites" -- e.g., to watch Tivo, you press the "Watch Tivo" button and the remote does the rest. Favorite channels can be done in under 10 minutes. It probably took me another half-hour to install the IR emitters, the base station and the RF antenna and do the RF programming on the remote to make each component RF only with its own ir address. BTW, the URC manual for the MRF 350 base station is really easy to follow and the RF settings on the remote itself are self-explanatory.
The guided programming is not as elegant as what you can do on a PC, and I had to start programming devices or macros over again once or twice, but the learning, macro and cut and paste functions are really helpful and easy. You can do just about anything that you can think of with this remote so long as you are a little bit organized. My unit gives me RF range to almost 100 feet through two interior walls and the performance has been reliable, even during long macros.
I highly recommend this as an alternative to other high-end RF remotes for DIY folks like me.

Got this at a Best Buy because it listed TCL as a supported brand and the TCL we had bought through Amazon wasn't compatible with our current cable remote. The 3rd code listed worked, and we now use only this remote for the cable and tv. Great value for the price.

Logitech Harmony IR Extender System (Black) Review

Logitech Harmony IR Extender System (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am using this IR extender with various remotes and am very happy with the performance. But my road to satisfaction had a bump I can help you avoid. I, like most folks, like to test things out to see if they work before I invest much time in installation. Installation is minimal in this case, just running some wires and making room to plug the device in on a pretty full UPS, but I wanted to test it out none the less. So I plugged everything in, moved the receiver around the corner, pointed the stylish blaster at the devices (an ATT Uverse box, TV and DVD player) and .... nothing happened. Added a mini blaster and ... I got very erratic transmission. Moved them closer, farther away ... still awful performance. I could see the lights responding on the blaster. I read the instructions again, which are very brief because the product is so simple, and still could not figure it out.
So, I called Logitech support, got escalated a level and then got an answer to my blunder. I am now appropriately humbled. I was pointing the shinny rounded edge toward the electronics. It is the side with the wires coming out that needs to be pointed in the general direction of the devices to be controlled. It makes total sense for when you install the blasters. They were designed to sit on a shelf slightly in front of any equipment with their wires extending toward the back of the shelf. But, when I was testing from in front of the equipment, I did not think to turn the blaster around so the side with all of the wires attached was pointing at the electronics.
Once over this bump in the road I created, the product worked well with all of my remotes. Of note, the IR receiver - the only part that sits out in the open - has a cord that is 8 feet in length and ends in what looks just like a 3.5mm audio jack. That should cover most applications. However, if additional length is needed, a headphone cord extender would fit - I just do not know of the signal would travel the additional length.

Onkyo TX-SR508 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

Onkyo TX-SR508 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The sound from my ten year old Onkyo TX-DS474 was now inferior and I had read very good reviews of the Onkyo SR 507, so decided to pre order the brand new SR 508. It arrived from Amazon on April 29th. I used the built in equalizer to set up the speakers, connected the receiver with brand new HDMI v1.4 cables and connected it to my Dish satellite receiver, my Panasonic BluRay DVD player and my Panasonic HDTV. The sound was excellent. Whereas before we had to turn up the volume too loud to follow dialog on some shows, or else it was not clear, with the SR 508 the sound was so much clearer that we could keep the volume much lower.
After about three days I noticed that although I would assign the input as cab/sat, the receiver indicated ipod (now no ipod dock was connected to the receiver) but the sound still came through from the satellite box. Strange but no problem. Then exactly one week after receiving the receiver, in the middle of watching a show, the picture and sound went blank. No pushing of different buttons on the remote would make it work. My first reaction was a bad HDMI cable, so I changed it. Nothing. I switched to the DVD player, but again blank. So then I hooked up the satellite box and the DVD player directly to the TV by separate HDMI cables, turned on the TV speakers, and the TV works again. Obviously the SR 508 suddenly failed and would not even work as a pass through. I am returning the set to Amazon for a replacement. If the replacement works fine for a reasonable amount of time, I will update this review.
I chose Onkyo partially because of its RIHD feature in conjunction with Panasonic. In my experience that only works so-so. Turning on the BluRay DVD player did switch the receiver directly to DVD. But turning it off does not switch back automatically to cab/sat. Turning off the TV also turns off the Onkyo, but not vice versa. You still have to turn on the Onkyo receiver separately.
One unexpected problem with the receiver is that the zone 2 input works only with an analog signal. On my DS-474, I have set up output B to speakers in my screened in porch to be able to listen to CDs or TV there. The B speakers work with digital. Now all my signal inputs for zone 2 are digital, so it appears that the zone 2 feature is useless. Bummer!
I should specify that I am not at all techie, so there may be work arounds that I don't know!
Update#1: The unit failed Thursday evening, I requested a replacement online from Amazon on Friday noon, it arrived at my house on Saturday at about 2pm. I'm sure everyone would agree that that is outstanding customer service from Amazon. I have now (Sunday) installed the replacement unit and again it appears to be working great. Provided it continues to do so, I will add a second update and change my rating to four stars. I remain disappointed that the zone 2 is not digital, hence not 5 stars.
Update #2: Four days after installing the second receiver, it also failed in the same way. However, at the bottom of the "Troubleshooting" page in the user manual, I found the following comment: "The AV receiver contains a microcomputer for signal processing and control functions. In very rare situations, severe interference, noise from an external source, or static electricity may cause it to lock up. In the unlikely event this happens, unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, wait at least five seconds and then plug it in again."
That worked and it has not locked up again in the last ten days. However, I certainly take issue with the "rare circumstances" and "unlikely event" and I can't imagine any special event that may have caused it. My receiver is in a cabinet with the plug behind it, so unplugging is quite inconvenient. This said, the sound from the receiver is really clear so, if this problem does not recur frequently, I will be happy with the purchase. I'm changing my rating from one star to three stars.

Pioneer VSX-820-K 5.1 Home Theater Receiver Review

Pioneer VSX-820-K 5.1 Home Theater Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After trying a Denon, and two Yamaha's, I finally hit gold with the Pioneer VSX-820.
This is a superb receiver in all regards. It produces clear crisp sound in all modes.
There are no lip synch issues at all when linked to my HDTV. I had terrible lip synch problems with the Denon. It has all the features I need and more and has an excellent remote that is both intuitive and comprehensive. I use my receiver for CD's, FM radio and my Samsung HDTV. I use DishNetwork for my TV programming.
The VSX series is Pioneer's newest and includes several models all the way up to the 1120.
However, when you read the specs, all these receivers have the same tuner and power plant. The higher the model number, the more numerous the features. But no increase in output.
That makes for an easier buying decision. You don't compromise power for features if you chose a mid range model like the 820 or 920. I noticed that the Denon and Yamaha receivers I tried were made in China. The Pioneers are made in Japan. I'll go with Japan for high quality electronics every time. Pioneer has hit a homerun with this new series of receivers.Update January 20,2011
My accolades now need to be tempered back. As with all 'features', they are only good
as long as they last. The IPOD interface on my VSX 820 died today in mid-song. I reviewed the manual and took the steps recommended, including resetting my IPOD with
no results. The IPOD works just fine. So I will no longer be able to hear my songs
thru my system but will instead have to be satisfied with just using the headphones.
Very disappointed with the lack of durability of this Pioneer receiver.

Onkyo TX-8255 Stereo Receiver Review

Onkyo TX-8255 Stereo Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've wondered at times about some of the glowing reviews I've read online over the years for various products: Are these real folks or PR plants from manufacturers? (Hey, it happens all the time in the hotel biz.)
So... if you share my suspicions, no, despite what follows, I don't work for Onkyo in any way shape or form--but I have been involved with audio in various capacities for many years. And... the last time I got this excited about a piece of electronics Ronald Reagan was president...
In short, if you're considering replacing an older receiver (or any receiver you're not currently totally in love with) and you aren't looking for surround sound or lots of bells and whistles, this is your amp. It has a rich, lush (very tube like) sound, and it doesn't sweat driving 4 ohm speakers very loudly (trust me, I know.)
But let's stay respectful: If you're looking to fart out bass at 130db, please don't waste your time with this receiver. Consider 10 o'clock the maximum volume setting for most digital sources. There are cheaper models on the market you can abuse. Please do.
Power. Clarity. Smoothness and functionality. Especially for well under $200 I doubt this receiver will ever meet its match.
post script: Since I wrote this review some time ago, I've noted a few criticisms regarding the sound of this receiver. Ok, here's the deal: It ain't a Krell or a Mark Levinson, but for a fraction of the cost you're getting, to me, the best sound available for a few hundred bucks--and quite often for multiples of that figure. Add in a cheap but fair sounding EQ and you suddenly have yourself fidelity that can very much approach audiophile standards. Under $1000 per unit, the number one problem I've found in so-called "mid-fi" gear is trouble in the 1K range. So if you can cheaply attenuate that, again, you've got yourself some very respectable sound at a bargain. But "off the rack," I've never found anything that approaches the sound of this unit at anywhere near the price. It was especially rewarding to read from so many folks (older ones in particular) how they and others were able rediscover the simple pleasure of listening to music again thanks to this cheap Onkyo receiver--and isn't that what good audio is all about?

Belkin Audio Y Cable Splitter 1-Mini Plug/2-RCA Plugs (6ft) Review

Belkin Audio Y Cable Splitter 1-Mini Plug/2-RCA Plugs (6ft)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For those who are not sure what this product does...it connects a single headphone jack (found on portable audio equipment) to right/left audio jack connectors on an audio receiver. So if your looking to hook up say your mp3 player or portable cd player to the receiver of your home stereo system look no further, you've found the right product.
I use this Belkin splitter to attach my muvo (mp3 flash player) and ,sometimes, my mp3 portable iriver cd player to my stereo system. Works great. I don't have a problem with the connection being loose, but I don't have an ipod to test this out with. My mp3 cd players and the few flash mp3 players I've tried work fine with this. Belkin, as usual, offers a quality product.
Cheap, works well, recommended.
