Harman Kardon AVR320 Audio/Video Receiver Review

Harman Kardon AVR320 Audio/Video Receiver
Average Reviews:

This is a very good receiver if you know how to use it.
Sound is very clean. Harman Kardon's 55 watts rate is
very consertive, it has more than enough power for my
need.
When I started shopping, I bought Onkyo 600 first (mainly
attracted by its 80 watts rating, and 6 channel output).
However, after listen to Onkyo for a couple weeks, I am not
satisfied with Onkyo's sound quality, so I purchased this one.
This receiver sounds much better than Onkyo. It produces much
cleaner sound. Finally, I returned Onkyo and kept this one.
I am using a pair of JBL S38-II as my main speakers. If you
can't hear the difference between this receiver and other
cheaper receivers, you are probably using not-so-good speakers.
If so, upgrade the speaker and hear the difference.
This receiver do have weakness though. It is not easy to use.
It takes me quite a while to get familiar with the remote and
the control buttons on the receiver. Even after I am familiar
with the remote, I would still say the remote is not easy to
use. Harman Kardon needs to improve its egnomics design.

The AVR 320 is Harman Kardon's first entry-level 7.1-channel surround-sound processing. Featuring support for Dolby Digital, DTS, Logic 7, and VMAx digital sound processing, the AVR 320 is meant to satisfy nearly any audio taste.
Pushing 55 watts per channel into 8 ohms, the AVR 320 will give you strong sound with less than 0.07 percent harmonic distortion, even with all channels being driven simultaneously. Eight-channel direct inputs are provided for future digital sound processing upgrades.
Loaded with advanced features, the AVR 320 includes DTS-ES 6.1 surround sound, wideband HDTV-ready component video switching, and 24-bit/192kHz audio digital-to-analog converter. Connection options are extensive with 7.1-channel preamp outputs, six digital inputs and three digital outputs, plus a front-panel digital input that can be switched to output mode.
Support for Dolby Pro Logic II Surround Sound is included to create surround-sound effects from a stereo input such as VCR or TV.
Additional features include multiroom/multisource audio which allows users in separate rooms to listen to different sources simultaneously. A separate Zone II Remote Control is included for multiroom operation. Power-up volume can be programmed to avoid that jarring sensation of powering up your stereo with the volume at max from the night before, and rotary controls let you adjust bass, treble, and balance settings.
A universal remote is programmable to control up to eight devices from preset codes or by using its learning capability.

Pioneer VSX-D514 Multi-Channel Digital A/V Receiver Review

Pioneer VSX-D514 Multi-Channel Digital A/V Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used this receiver for a year, during which time I've had nothing to complain about. It's a respectable buy in its price range, sounds quite good, and is not overly complex. I've just replaced it as my primary receiver, though, because it doesn't have enough digital inputs to handle a variety of sources. To manage the optical inputs from my TV, DVD recorder, Macintosh computer, cable box, and CD recorder, I was required to buy a switching device from Radio Shack. Now my new receiver has enough inputs to manage the load, as well as vastly more power and features. The 514 has only one optical and two coax inputs.
I expect the 514 to continue to give service for a long time, hooked up the bookshelf speakers in my bedroom.
If you want basic stereo and surround capability, this is a model worth considering, but if you imagine your needs will grow like mine have, then you might want to bump up to a more expensive/expansive unit. (In case you wonder, I now have a Yamaha HRT-5890, and it early on seems an excellent choice.)
Note that I do not dabble in the black arts of the audiophiles. I'm an unpretentious listener with reasonably high expectations. I doubt if I would care about the alleged sound distinctions between, say, a Denon and a Yamaha. I do care a lot about the quality of the user's manual, and the D514 has one that is not hard to understand.
You might have a problem figuring out from the Amazon description that the 514 is 5x100 watts.

Designed to give consumers full control over their home entertainment experience, the Pioneer VSX-D514-S 5.1-channel digital A/V receiver is a great fit for the discriminating movie and music fan. The receiver, which powers five channels at 100 watts each, is equipped with Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II surround processing, giving DVDs a rich, full-bodied sound through a multichannel speaker system. Dolby Digital and DTS decoding technologies split the audio signals among four left and right surround speakers, a center speaker, and a subwoofer, while Pro Logic II converts two-channel stereo sources into five-channel surround sound. On surround encoded material such as movie soundtracks, the resulting audio is powerful and explosive, while with two-channel encoded material such as music CDs, the effect is a wider and more encompassing sound field with more localized vocals.
Internally, the VSX-D514-S boasts a single compact circuit board for all digital signal processing, thus ensuring exceptional purity, plus a double-precision Motorola 48-bit DSP engine that's similar to the one used in top theaters worldwide. The receiver also offers a discrete configuration along with Pioneer's hybrid amplification system, which directs the correct amount of bias signal to each transistor for extremely low distortion. This means that Pioneer's amps are designed to handle the full bandwidth of Dolby Digital, DTS, SACD, and DVD-Audio encoded software. Add that to the high-end digital-to-analog audio converter and you have a top-shelf receiver.
Installation takes just a few minutes thanks to the Quick Setup feature, which walks the consumer through the setup process. Listeners simply tell the receiver how many speakers are connected and then select the room size. The receiver then delivers an accurate surround sound performance based on the configuration. Additional features include component and S-video switching, which allows both progressive and interlaced NTSC and HDTV signals to travel to the TV or monitor; five digital signal processing modes, including game and movie modes; multiple digital coaxial and optical inputs; and a preset LCD remote control. The VSX-D514-S measures 16.56 by 6.25 by 15.5 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
What's in the Box VSX-D514-S receiver, remote control, two AA batteries, AM and FM antennas, user's manual.

Harman Kardon AVR 7000 Dolby Digital/DTS Audio/Video Receiver Review

Harman Kardon AVR 7000 Dolby Digital/DTS Audio/Video Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After a lengthy process of comparison shopping, both on-line, and in the stores, I arrived at a short list of two receivers which had the features I wanted at a price I could afford. One was the popular Denon AVR3300, and the other was the relatively new (to Australia), HK AVR7000. I have to say that both units are excellent for their intended purpose, which is to provide better than average two channel sound for music lovers, while adding the dimension of 5.1 channel sound to DVD movies. In the end the HK won out, because it was cheaper and didn't have the potential problems associated with an internal fan. The HK uses passive cooling via large heatsinks. The sound from my HK is very good, though the NAD amp it replaced sounded just as good in my opinion, for two channel stereo. The sound on Dolby Digital and DTS is fantastic. It took me a day or two to work my way through the manual, and adjust the various settings to arrive at a sound that worked in my smallish room. I particularly like the way in which the AVR7000 remembers the setups for each input. So now when I select CD as the input, the AVR7000 knows to switch off the sub woofer and the rear surround speakers. Likewise, it remembers to add these back when DVD is selected as the input. The remote works well, though I've yet to use it's learning capabilities. Other features I like are component video switching (which most DVD players use these days), tone defeat option (I like my sound as uncolored as possible), and on-screen setup menu (made it pretty easy to adjust my settings. On the downside, the AVR7000 is huge in size, and is vented all around (due to the absence of an internal fan), so it's placement can be a problem in some homes. Whatever you do, don't place it where someone might carelessly place a drink glass on it, as a single drop going through the vented top cover would be the end of your unit. There are a lot of receivers on the market today and in the end it comes down to your budget and the features you want. For me, the AVR7000 was the best sounding, most fully featured unit on the market within my budget. Happy shopping.

Verrry disappointing purchase.
The unit boots slowly, so no music, GPS or video for some number of minutes! This is after the latest SW upgrade that supposedly fixes this problem, I can't imagine earlier versions.
The display is not visible in sunlight and/or with polarized lenses. (Does anyone at Pioneer test this junk?)
The GPS can only be programmed after the car is started and while the car is in park and the e-brake is on! I guess passengers manipulating the nav system is a rare thing.
The USB memory stick must be unplugged and re-installed after the car is started to access the contents!
The volume/main control knob is very difficult to grip and operate, what were they thinking? (They were probably thinking everyone has small fingers)
The user interface is not consistent. The positions of the same functions move around from display to display for no good reason.
The bling noise cannot be turned off for the steering wheel controls. Come on guys, this unit is computer based, there's no reason for this type of inflexibility.
If the devil is in the details this unit is, unfortunately, be-deviled!!! In my opinion, this system was slapped together with little thought for the customer by people that do not understand or care how a nav a/v system should perform.
I am certain there are better units out there for this price point. If I were seeking an in dash nav a/v unit, I would keep looking for some other Manufacturers comparable system.

Pioneer VSX-816-K 7.1-channel XM-Ready A/V Receiver, Black Review

Pioneer VSX-816-K 7.1-channel XM-Ready A/V Receiver, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To start off with, as an Alaska resident the free shipping was a deal maker for me. That said, I've had no problems with the receiver itself, save for a small scratch on the faceplate. Super-Saver has its detriments I suppose.
Performance wise, the receiver is excellent for my setup. I haven't had the opportunity to crank the volume due to the next door neighbors, but 5.1 is spot on, and with MCACC I'm finally able to get a decent optimization for the basement i've got my home theatre set up in. MCACC is definitely worth the extra expense as it saves a lot of time and eliminates a lot of the guess work. It took only a few minutes to setup initially, and I don't anticipate any problems when I add the Sony 550 center I just ordered and move my old center channel to the back for a 6.1 setup.
Featurewise, the 3 optical inputs and 3 component video switching was another selling point for me, as I have a DVD player, XBox, and XBox 360 in this setup. 1080i and 720p passthrough is perfect. Being able to assign the optical and component to different inputs is another excellent feature that helped me setup the receiver exactly the way I wanted it. Another feature is the Sound Retriever technology which really does smooth out low bitrate audio. For example, this past weekend I listened to the LDS General Conference (a 16k audio stream) with my wife, and we both thought it sounded great with this feature turned on (and 7 channel stereo). I haven't tried out the XM features yet, maybe one day.
I looked at the 516 as well, but it just didn't have the features I really wanted, and wouldn't have been a stepup at all from my old receiver. The extra features, are in my case, well worth the extra money.

Yamaha HTR-5760 7.1-Channel Digital Home Theater Receiver Review

Yamaha HTR-5760 7.1-Channel Digital Home Theater Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Oh Boy ! Prices have come down on quality receivers. Not only do you get more ... but you pay less than the previous version. This one has everything a picky home theater enthusiast is look for:
1 - 7.1 ch amplification
2 - 7.1 preouts (to connect a robust poweramp)
3 - Dolby ProLogic IIx (don't watch movies without it)
4 - Microphone Calibration (not parametric as the name suggests) ... better than an SPL since this measures spkr delays etc.
5 - Adjustable SUB Crossover (down to 40hz)
5 - Construction and overall quality
For Home Theater and Movies ? 5 STARS (Audio in a movie disc is not audiophile grade, so this receiver is just fine for that)
As an audiophile 2-channel receiver ? 3 STARS (get a external good quality poweramp for this)
Suggestions to Yamaha:
1 - Upgrade firmware to allow receiver to use a specific setting as te default for all signals. For instance, if you have a 7 speaker setup ... you should be able to make the player default to Dolby Prologic IIx for any and all signals.
2 - Remove the TUNER and reduce the cost. If you want to listen to the radio ... use that clock radio ! or go out for a drive in your car.
3 - Give us a lighted remote. Any Home Theater component ought to have a lighted remote. I am sure you know why. Right ?
Overall a very good receiver. Good work Yamaha. Bye Bye overpriced Denon.

For incredible quality and setup flexibility at an amazingly affordable price, it's hard to top Yamaha's high-current HTR-5760 audio/video receiver. With the HTR-5760 you get the convenience of DVD-Audio/SACD-ready eight-channel analog inputs alongside the latest 6.1- and 7.1-channel surround processing, multiroom control, and premium Yamaha sound technologies. When hooked up with the digital-audio output from a DVD-Video player or digital satellite receiver, the 95-watts-per-channel HTR-5760 handles 5.1-channel surround decoding for both major formats, Dolby Digital and DTS. In addition, the receiver processes Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, DTS-ES Discrete 6.1, DTS Neo:6, and DTS 96/24. The extended-surround formats create even more expansive soundfields through a center-rear surround channel, for which THX suggests using two separate speakers. The result is seven discrete full-range channels in addition to the LFE (low-frequency effects) channel: front left/right, surround left/right, front center channel, and a pair of rear-center channels.A key benefit from a Yamaha receiver, of course, is Yamaha's proprietary signal processing, including Cinema DSP (digital soundfield processing), which creates aural "imaging" that not only makes your home sound like a theater, but also sounds better than most movie theaters. Based on a wealth of measured data in real studios and halls, Cinema DSP is designed to bring out the full potential of movie sound mixes, reproducing them the way directors and sound engineers intended. And, when you're listening to multichannel presentations late at night, you'll appreciate Silent Cinema, which simulates 5.1-channel listening through a pair of ordinary 2-channel headphones (not included). Silent Cinema uses unique parameters for each soundfield to ensure accurate headphone representations of each soundfield. The receiver comes with YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer) and a dedicated microphone to help you establish the best possible sound at your primary listening position. The optimizer uses the microphone to "listen" to the sound from the speakers and determine, based on its test-signals, how best to equalize the sound for your room. Corrections include speaker/subwoofer phase relationships, speaker/subwoofer distance measurements (corrects for differences down to 5 cm), frequency response (measures and optimizes each speaker's response using a parametric equalizer), and speaker level (measures and aligns the relative volume levels of all speakers). Then there's the eight-channel DVD-Audio/SACD-ready inputs mentioned above. Due to anti-piracy measures, DVD-Audio and SACD players perform their own digital-to-analog conversion, passing high-resolution analog signals on to your amplifier. (And analog, after all, is what your amp feeds your speakers.)DVD-Audio and SACD can each deliver up to six channels of discrete, full-frequency sound at greater-than-CD resolution (in the case of DVD-A, that means 24 bits, 96 kHz sampling rate versus 16 bits, 44.1 kHz for CD). In stereo or surround, the sound from DVD-Audio and SACD is packed with detail, yet smoother and sweeter from than the sound from even the best standard CD players. The HTR-5760 accommodates decoded DVD-A/SACD signals and routes them to the appropriate speakers in your surround system. The receiver offers five audio/video input connections (all with composite-/S-video, two with component-video), eight fixed and assignable digital-audio inputs (great for DSS, CD, laserdisc, gaming consoles, or minidisc), and front-panel input connections with digital-audio jacks for your camcorder or other spontaneous hookup. The receiver's video circuitry is high-definition ready, too (60 MHz bandwidth), and it will upconvert composite-video to an S-video signal to simplify TV hookup.Last, but certainly not least, the HTR-5760 benefits from Yamaha's Digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) build philosophy. The culmination of the best digital engineering and design possible, it brings together several key elements to create the best-sounding, easiest-to-use A/V components available. What's in the Box Receiver, remote control, four AAA batteries, microphone for YPAO, an AM loop antenna, an indoor FM antenna, a warranty card, and a user's manual.

Pioneer SE-A1000 Lightweight Audiophile AV Over-Ear Headphones (Black) Review

Pioneer SE-A1000 Lightweight Audiophile AV Over-Ear Headphones (Black)

These headphones do not cancel any noise from coming out or coming in, but they are not suppose to. The audio quality is the main focus here. The bass could be a little beefier but overall good blend. I think the best part about these headphones are the level of comfort. This set just lays on your head without any force and you can wear them for hours at a time. I would recommended these based off of sound and comfort. Just don't trip over the 6 m cable.

Pioneer AVIC-U220 Add-On Navigation Device Review

Pioneer AVIC-U220 Add-On Navigation Device
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If i hadn't gotten a few amazon gift cards for Christmas, i probably wouldn't have bought this, due to the fact that you can get a navigation deck for $300-400 and they want $250 for the add on navi. I have it hooked up to the Avh-P3200dvd. Installation was fairly easy, plan on putting it somewhere very easily accessible (I'll explain in a bit)
When i first installed it and drove around for a bit, i realized that the Avic-U220 bypasses the parking brake bypass that I installed on the 3200dvd. So i can no longer view movies while driving. The easy solution to this, is to have the U220 unplugged (out of its cradle) before you start your car. After you start your car and the deck powers up, plug the U220 into its cradle and then the parking break bypass will still work, and you'll be able to view movies (thats why i installed it below the shifter in my car). I've done research and found that others have used a PAC TR7 module and had it setup to have a 5 second delay before powering up the U220.
The second thing that i dont like about the U220 is that it has an accelerometer/gyroscope that knows when you're going faster than 10mph and you cannot enter destinations or search for POI's until you go slower than 10mph. Hopefully someone will figure out how to bypass the accelerometer/gyroscopes, but i doubt it.
I like the idea of being able to add on navigation to my deck, but i wish i would have just waited and purchased one of pioneers higher-end navigation decks, instead of adding bluetooth and navigation on to a base model.

Pioneer AVIC-Z120BT 7" In-Dash Double-Din Navigation CD/DVD/MP3 with Pandora iPhone streaming Review

Pioneer AVIC-Z120BT 7 In-Dash Double-Din Navigation CD/DVD/MP3 with Pandora iPhone streaming
Average Reviews:

[*** UPDATE 9/9/2010 - It turns out that firmware version 2.003, which I just installed tonight, fixes the bug where you have to press OK before your phone connects to the AVIC-Z120BT. I tested this out and it works as expected now. ***]
I got this AVIC-Z120BT unit a few days ago and installed it in my 2009 Nissan Frontier. The install did take a while; but, I had several quotes by some car audio installation places and I decided I'd be better off doing it myself and saving the money. So far, I am absolutely loving having this system in my truck!
In the attached video, I tried to go over some of the main features of this unit. I'll also try to cover most of the same material here for people that don't want to spend the time to watch the video. Here are the things I'm loving about this Pioneer navigation system:
1) The sound quality is very good. The radio reception is also exceptional for both AM and FM.
2) The media source selection is great! This unit supports playing from CDs & DVDs (including MP3s from either), SD cards with either video or music, iPods (using an additional interface cable), USB keys, or the internal AM/FM tuner. You can also add an HD radio tuner, although I didn't add that feature. Personally, I love that I can stick an SD card with all my music in this unit and it is always available to me without having to mess with an FM transmitter or hook up my phone to the receiver.
3) The navigation system itself is very good. The maps are up to date in my area, and it looks like new maps can be downloaded from Pioneer when they are available. It has all the standard nav features, like being able to adjust the scale or change the top of the map to be either North or to be inline with your current heading. It also offers turn-by-turn guidance, waypoints, and can be controled using voice commands - although I haven't played with this much.
4) The Bluetooth interface on the receiver is amazing! It automatically downloads the contacts from my phone whenever it turns on and then I have access to all of my contacts through the nav system. Even though my Android phone does NOT support voice dialing over Bluetooth, I can now use the voice dialing feature of this receiver and it automatically dials my phone.
5) The voice interface in general is very good. It handles everything from voice dialing to switching inputs - even when I'm driving down the highway. The included mic works fine for phone calls in the truck, although it does sound like I'm talking on a speaker phone (which I basically am when using this system).
6) Incoming calls on this system work very well. A small overlay pops up on the screen that lets you answer incoming calls, hang up, etc... It also mutes (or turns down) the currently playing audio during the phone call.
7) The backup camera is a great addition. It switches on automatically when the truck is in reverse, and it can also be used in conjunction with the map view - which will be great for towing.
8) The system boots fairly quickly. The backup camera and previously selected music source are available almost instantly, where the navigation system and other controls are available after about 15 seconds. My Android phone typically takes about 45 seconds to connect from the time the system first starts up.
9) I should have shown this in the video, but the screen tilt can be adjusted if you need it to angle up a bit. In my truck, I don't need it to tilt at all; so I tend to forget about that.
10) The interface looks great and is very easy to use! The system also looks great in my truck.
11) You can set an anti-theft password through a 'secret' interface, and the system will prompt for the password if the backup power is ever cut. I think this is a dubious 'anti-theft' feature since the system could easily be stolen and the thieves wouldn't find out about the password until they were back at the secret lair :). I guess I would have the satisfaction of knowing they probably couldn't use it...Although I absolutely love this Pioneer nav system, there are some quirks in the firmware that I hope will be addressed by future releases:
1) [*** UPDATE - This is fixed in firmware version 2.003. ***] When booting the system, you need to press OK on the warning screen BEFORE the system connects to your phone. Otherwise, you won't be able to voice dial until the car is turned off and back on again. If the system boots up into the map screen, this is pretty easy since the prompt will show before the map is displayed. If, on the other hand, the system boots into the media mode, the prompt won't even display until you manually switch to either the home screen or the navigation system - and it can be easy to forget until you need to make a call...
2) The AM and FM presets are named based on the text being broadcast by the station. That makes no sense in my case, so I end up with presets with names like "ive,". I wish that could just be turned off and I could just have the frequencies displayed - or it would also be great if I could name the presets myself. Normally, I don't mind remembering the preset numbers - but this interface doesn't really lend itself to that. Hopefully this will be fixed/changed soon!
3) I wish this system would show album art for songs that are on the SD card. I called Pioneer and verified that isn't supported in the current firmware.
4) On bright days, the display tends to be a bit washed out - even on the brightest setting. It's still visible, but just barely. I may end up getting my front windows tinted to help out with this.Overall, I really love this system and would highly recommend it if you want an integrated nav/bluetooth/multimedia system in your vehicle. The combined feature-set that this added to my truck wouldn't have even been possible a few years ago; and, the Pioneer pulls it all off with a very nicely integrated user interface. There are some quirks in the firmware, but I think they should all be easily addressed by future firmware updates - I just hope Pioneer does us all the favor of actually updating the firmware!
I will update this review to reflect any changes in my opinions, or if new firmware versions are released.

Pioneer VSX23 Elite 7.1 Channels A/V THX Receiver Review

Pioneer VSX23 Elite 7.1 Channels A/V THX Receiver
Average Reviews:

This receiver is wonderful. I compared this side by side with similar products from Denon, Marantz, Onkyo, and Yamaha. While all sounded quite good, the pioneer matched best with my NHT speakers. The signal is perfectand it generates plenty of power. It will get quite loud especially if you are using speakers with a 90+ efficiency. The digital signals all worked perfectly, no hassles, including the HD audio from my bluray player. The remote works good as well, although the menu set up isnt the greatest. I take audio quality over this though any day, and this Pioneer delivers exactly what I need. Highly recommended.

Pioneer AVIC-X910BT 5.8-Inch In-Dash Navigation A/V Receiver with DVD Playback and Bluetooth Review

Pioneer AVIC-X910BT 5.8-Inch In-Dash Navigation A/V Receiver with DVD Playback and Bluetooth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought the X910BT for my car, we enjoy traveling the back roads of Arizona and the southwest. Having the Nav system installed in the car makes things very easy - no hassle connecting the various devices, cables running all over, taking it down and putting it back up when making stops, and little "suction circles" on the windshield that thieves look for. Now I only have to fuss with the radar detector. Startup time on the unit is really not a problem, my Garmin would often take several minutes to startup, the AVIC is typically ready to go in about 1 minute. The bluetooth connection takes a little longer and the unit is very sluggish until the bluetooth connects. After the bluetooth is connected, the X910BT is very responsive.
It's a very easy unit to operate after you get used to it. My previous GPS was a Garmin unit, and I really got spoiled by their features. A few things I can complain about with the X910BT:
- Voice recognition on bluetooth - just doesn't seem to understand what I'm saying, either by name or number. I usually end up selecting the contact off the screen instead of telling it who to call. After the call has started, it works great, incoming sound is loud and clear. One person told me I sounded kind of muffled on their end, but they did not have any problem understanding me.
- Route planning is a bit of a pain if you're like me and like to take the back roads. When we travel, we like to stay off the interstate as much as possible. Disabling the Highway option makes for some very long trips as it will try to route you way out of the way to avoid highways. The AVICFeeds software is ok and I have used it to generate POIs for route planning, but it is tedious and not as easy to use as Garmin's MapSource. AVICFeeds also has a 300 item limit on POIs it can import, which means getting creative if your have a file with a large number of locations, such as those found on POI-Factory.com.
- The volume knob is really small and hard to grasp. I picked up a press on knob from a guy on AVIC411.com and it works great, easy to grasp and works the way it should have from the factory.
- The maps are very limited in the speed limit data they have. One a recent trip Southern California, we were being tailed by a CHP on one of the backroads. We were doing a reasonable speed, but the AVIC did not have any speed information for the road we were on. Additionally, many of the major surface streets in the Phoenix metro area also do not have any speed limit info available. It was very rare for the Garmin to not have speed limit data available.
I have the Sirius option installed, it works great and I listen to it more often than FM or my SD Card. I used the factory installed Sirius antenna lead to connect to the X910BT with no problem. I was able to transfer my new car subscription over and they even waived the $15 transfer fee. I also found a nice flat spot under the dash to put the GPS antenna where it is hidden and out of sight. I do not have any extra objects laying on my dash or on my roof as giveaways to what I have in my car. I ran the microphone up inside the front pillar, under the roof liner and used velcro strips to attach it to the rear view mirror. It's almost completely out of sight unless you know what to look for.
I really like he X910BT and would not go back to the portable Garmin GPS, though we still have it for use in our other vehicles and when we are hanging around planning a trip. It's great having the GPS built-in, many times we are out running around and decide to go someplace, we can enter whatever we want to find right in the GPS and it tells us where it's at.

Pioneer VSX-1016TXV-K 7.1 Channel Audio/Video Receiver Review

Pioneer VSX-1016TXV-K 7.1 Channel Audio/Video Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Awesome receiver, lots of inputs. Simple and good autoconfiguration. It is able to convert all inputs to component. Don't use the HDMI but its there. I wish it had more than 3 S/PDIF ports but I'm an overly optical kinda person. Cheap receiver with all the features of higher priced ones. Lots of controls on front for the times when you've misplaced your remote (some people find this unattractive but personally like the buttons not covered up). No audio sync feature but it's not really a problem unless your projector or HDTV is slow. You can map component, coxial, and optical ports to any of the sources despite all of them having labels.

Pioneer VSX-D812-K - AV receiver - 5.1 channel - black Review

Pioneer VSX-D812-K - AV receiver - 5.1 channel - black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this receiver used a couple months ago. So far it's done very well. In comparison to today's receivers this one doesn't have half of the 'bells and whistles,' but it does a great job with the basics.
I went with the Pioneer brand because the my 13 year old Pioneer Pro Logic receiver outlasted my 7 year old Kenwood DD/DTS receiver. The receiver sounds great with movies (in both DD and DTS) as well as music (in DD/DTS or just a stereo CD).
The best part about the receiver is the pre-outs for all 5.1 channels for separate amplifiers. I am currently running a powered sub and a separate 2-channel amp for the fronts and it sounds incredible.
The receiver is also expandable to 7.1 channels.
PROS:
Reliable!
5.1 channel pre-outs
Solid performance for movies and music (great DD/DTS processing!)
CONS:
No auto-setup feature (see VSX-d912 for that)
No learning remote

Harman Kardon AVR 500 Dolby Digital/DTS Audio/Video Receiver Review

Harman Kardon AVR 500 Dolby Digital/DTS Audio/Video Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It runs on 45 amps. Simply put this is the number you should be looking at. Other receivers at higher price points run less amps compensating with more watts. I auditioned an Onkyo (36 amps I think & 105 watts/channel) with the HK AVR500 (45 amps & 80 watts/channel). At the same volume level, the HK blows away the competition with rich, full sound.
The pros outweigh any of the cons with this unit. As with all HK products, this particular unit is very sleek and elegant looking. The surround modes are easy to setup using on-screen menus which also allow for plenty of customization. As for the remote, I've seen better but this one does allow for macros permitting you to turn-on your entire system with the touch of one button. And again, this unit sounds GREAT with all inputs including cassette, CD, DVD, VHS, and cable producing very vivid and accurate sound.
Now for the cons... ...this model lacks many of the surround modes (theater, cinema, auditorium, arena etc) that other systems have. My personal feeling is that this is not necessarily a con. I don't need all of these other "processed" modes but it may be something you like. I have just replaced a Dolby ProLogic receiver that had all of these extra modes which, after playing with them at first, I forgot about and never utilized for many years. It does have Pro Logic, Dolby Digital and DTS which are all essential.
Please let the following con pay tribute to the outstanding output of this unit. The AVR500 does not have an input for phono. I love my vinyl and have hundreds of albums. Because of this I almost decided to purchase the Onkyo which included a line-level input for phono. The HK's sound was SO convincing that I opted to retire my turntable to the closet (I have since hooked it up to a separate amp).
There you have it, my thoughts on the AVR500. I hope my review has helped and I wish you the best on your search for a receiver.

Harman Kardon's AVR 500 combines excellence with ease of use. Harman Kardon has long been known for their clean sounding high current amplifiers and stylish designs. They are able to brilliantly integrate these features into an easy-to-use high-performance machine. At 70 watts of high-current power to all 5 channels, this receiver has plenty of juice to produce incredible, room-shaking surround sound while still being able to deliver crisp, clear music and vocals. The high current design and ultrawide-bandwidth make for increased load capacity, better peak and valley reproduction, and flat-out better sound. Hearing is believing, and the AVR 500 effortlessly proves that to be true. Harman Kardon stays on top of cutting-edge technology, by adding features such as Logic 7 Cinema and Surround Modes and VMAx Virtual Surround Sound. Logic 7 Cinema and Music Surround was developed for creating multi-channel surround playback from two-channel sources, such as music. VMAx, Virtual Multi Axis Sound, recreates a realistic, multi-channel effect from any source by simulating a large "sweet spot". VMAx technology is currently being used in some virtual reality games - it enables the listener to place themselves as close or as far from their speakers, while still receiving the full effect of the sound. Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital and DTS are also on board, allowing you to decode virtually any source out there. As one of the newest members of the Harman Kardon family, the AVR 500 easily earns its place in the ranks as a winner. By combining new technology and features with their reputable standards of phenomenal sound and user-friendliness, Harman Kardon has done it again.

Pioneer VSX-519V-K 5-Channel A/V Receiver (Black) Review

Pioneer VSX-519V-K 5-Channel A/V Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Pioneer VSX-519V is an entry level 5.1 receiver made by Pioneer. Yet, don't let the fact that it is the cheapest 5.1 receiver they carry turn you away. This product has plenty bang for its buck. The receiver has an excellent build and a sleek look to it, but that is not all. The receiver has a plethura of connections ranging from hdmi, optical, digital coaxial, component, analog video, and of course and antenna hookup. The only hookup missing is s-video. The receiver handles video signals well. I cannot discern any degredation of video quality when compared to a direct video hookup to the television. Now moving onto the real reason someone would buy this, surround sound. This receiever can power my Bose Acoustimass Series I speaker system very well. It gets very loud and there are no signs of the speakers being underpowered. For volume control there is a knob on the right front side you can turn. The sound level ranges from 1 to 80. Which does strike me as a bit odd why only to eighty, why not a hundred instead? You can also adjust the volume with the included remote. The remote is very substantial and lets you control any and every setting the receiver has. The remote takes 2 AAA batteries to work; a pair is of course included. Functions, there are many effects and settings you can change on the receiver but most are uneeded and will most likely be overlooked. An example of these includes the settings for different types of music such as rock and classical. You are better off just leaving these options alone. However is you are interested the manual is very thorough and describes this receivers features in much greater detail. All you need to know is this receiver supports Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS, and Dolby Prologic II for your stereo encoded sources. When you play a DVD that supports say DTS the receiver will automatically detect this and switch to that setting. So for movies, television shows, videogames, and music this projector has it covered. However there are a few downsides. The receiver does not support HDMI passthrough for audio sources. This means you can't hook all your audio souces up and then run them through one HDMI and have it transfer all your audio signals through that one hdmi cable. Only more expensive receivers support this feature. It also has no upscaling feature, which is no surprise for a sub [...]receiver. And finally the reason I give it 4/5 stars instead of 5/5. The receiver is advertised as having 5x110 watts for a total of 550 watts and 110 watts per channel at an excellent .05% distortion level. This is not entirely true. While it may be true in some respects it is a bit deceiving. In the manual it states "continuous average power output of 80 watts* per channel, min., at 8 ohms, from 20Hz to 20 000hz with no more than 0.2%** total harmonic distortion. So it makes you wonder if you one can really trust wattage and distortion levels. It may be able to push a 110 watts a channel, but at continuous average power at 20hz-20,000hz with .05% distortion, it seems not. Anyway if you are looking for an entry-level home theatre receiver for your 5.1 system and are on a budget look no further.

Pioneer VSX-1015TXK 7.1 Channel Surround Sound THX Select AM/FM Audio-Video Receiver Review

Pioneer VSX-1015TXK 7.1 Channel Surround Sound THX Select AM/FM Audio-Video Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the money, there is no comparable receiver. I've been an audiophile for some 20+ years and this is one of the best values I've ever seen.
I have a relatively complex HDTV system and this receiver works perfectly.
Some of the highlights:
- Switches 3 component video inputs. This is great for HDTV setups.
- Onscreen setup. It makes setup *much* easier.
- Dynamic adjustment to the setup through the use of a microphone. Although I have a sound pressure meter and had gone through a system setup, the auto setup made an obvious improvement to the sound quality.
- Clean, simple looks. Unless you love to see lots of buttons and knobs, it looks good.
- Upconversion from composite and S-video to component. This can dramatically simplify the use of your system.
I highly recommend this receiver. I give it 5 stars because it does exactly what it should for a great price.

This generates equal amplifier power for all 7 amplified channels (front left, center, right, mid-rear left/right, and rear left/right), eliminating the possibility of any one channel dominating a particular sound field.Dolby Digital and DTS decoding brings theater sound right into your home with up to 6 discrete channels of surround sound, including a special ".1" LFE (low-frequency effects) channel for deep, realistic sound effects. The built-in Dolby Pro Logic IIx and DTS Neo:6 decoders not only provide full surround sound decoding for Dolby Surround sources, but will also generate convincing surround sound for any stereo source. Also, with the addition of a surround back speaker, you can take advantage of the built-in Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES decoders for 6.1-channel surround sound. Auto MCACC Setup measures the acoustic characteristics of your listening area, taking into account ambient noise, speaker size and distance, and tests for both channel delay and channel level. After you've set up the microphone provided with your system, the receiver uses the information from a series of test tones to optimize the speaker settings and EQ for your particular room. For complete surround sound control you still have access to the full range of surround sound settings.Connections consist of 5 digital-audio inputs (3 optical, 2 coaxial) and 1 output (optical), 5 each composite- and S-video inputs (with 5 accompanying left/right stereo analog audio jacks), and 3 high-bandwidth (5 Hz to 100 MHz) component-video inputs. The unit offers convenient, high-quality binding-post terminals for all speaker connections (7 plus left/right outputs for a stereo speaker-B output). And you'll also appreciate the receiver's 7.1-channel RCA preamp outputs whenever you're ready to move to higher-power amplification. What's more, the receiver converts S-video and composite-video to component-video signals, so you only need one video connection to your TV/monitor, irrespective of your viewing source. The supplied LCD learning remote control gives you not only complete control over every function of this receiver, but also over the main functions for other components in your home theater system. Using a system of preset codes, you can program the remote to operate a wide range of other equipment. If you often listen to a particular radio station, it's convenient to have the receiver store the frequency for easy recall whenever you want to listen to that station. This receiver can memorize up to 30 stations. The VSX-1015TX bears the THX Select2 logo, which means it has passed a rigorous series of quality and performance tests covering every aspect of the product. This includes testing of preamplifier and power amplifier performance and operation and hundreds of other parameters in both the digital and analog domains, helping to ensure that your home theater experience as faithful as possible to what the studios intended. What's in the Box Receiver, remote control, remote batteries, calibration microphone, FM and AM antennas, a user's manual, and warranty information.
