Best Buy's Magnolia room recommended this combination for me, but I found it bundled for much less money on Amazon (Electronics).
The Denon receiver comes with a microphone that you attach to a tripod and that takes calculations at six places around where you will sit. It then decides what is the best for the five speakers. The process is easy and straightforward. I went through it twice and was happy with both results. The subwoofer is discreet, not too booming, and the small multidirectional Mirage speakers are attractive and come with wall mounts that I attached to the front of bookcases in the rear and around the new Samsung LED TV in the front. The Denon AV1611 model comes with the capacity to attach 7 speakers, therefore two in another room.
The four stars are because all this is in a small room, next to an open two story staircase, so it's hard to really test the capacities of the system. But for what I have, it sounds pretty good. Everything went together easily.
The Denon also comes with a tuner and Am/FM antennas.

I have gone through 2 of these now. First one didn't have an end on it. Just pins. Got another then started having static and then fallout (no HDMI Signal). I have a monster 400 too which works great. So I guess Monster HDMI cables only work at above the $50 mark! HAHA Please look up CNETs comparision of HDMI cables as they are all really the same. CNET uses cheap crap ones in there reviewer room to prove the point that HDMI is built to a spec and as long as the build quality is there IE soldering everything correctly and using wire that is sutable there will never be a picture or sound difference. Oh and if you care about sound run it through a Fiber or digital cable rather than trying to jam it all d through the HDMI. So what I am saying is these cable are not even built to the most basic specs. They are complete crap. By a $1 one and you will get better results.

Sony STR-DH700 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver (Black) Review

Sony STR-DH700 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my second Sony Receiver in a row. In fact, the only reason I even upgraded my STR DE697 7.1 receiver was because it didn't have HDMI inputs--aside from that deficiency I was completely satisfied. So after researching the Yamaha (RX-V464BL), Onkio (RX-V463BL), and Sony (STR-DH700) I stuck with Sony and purchased the STR-DH700 7.1-channel A/V receiver. Now, most will say I'm crazy for not going with the Onkio, but I've always been pleased with Sony and I wanted to 1) save some $$$ and 2) avoid a steep learning curve (I'm very used to Sony's products).
PROS: My favorite feature has to be the quick set up for the speakers. With the push of a button in just 30 seconds my speakers were auto calibrated via the calibration mic. GREAT FEATURE!
CONS: The music settings i.e. Jazz, Stadium, Hall, etc. are useless to me due to the fact the subwoofer is excluded from all the settings in this mode except Portable (setting for MP3 players). I'm not sure why Sony did this, but it really stinks since my Polk front channels are rather small and depend on my 8" sub for quality sound. Again, this is my only complaint and because 99% of what this receiver is used for is cinema I'll survive!
Overall I'm very pleased with this entry level receiver. For an extra $100 I could have gone with the STR-DH800 which includes Dolby® TrueHD Decoding, but since I'm only running a 3.1 set-up I figured I'd be okay. I would; however, suggest paying the additional $100 between the STR-DH500 and DH700 because the HDMI connections in the DH500 only carry video, so you'd have to run separate cables for audio.
My Set-up:
TV: Vizio XVT series 42"
RECEIVER: Sony STR-DH700
BLUE RAY: Sony BDP-S360
SPEAKERS: Polk Audio surround RM10 set w/ PSW111 Subwoofer
UPDATE: 2 May 2009 - I'm attempting to edit this post again. Basically, the issue with the music sound fields was due to my assumtion that the auto-calibration would set the speaker size. WHAT WAS I THINKING? Once I changed the speaker settings from LARGE to SMALL everything worked like a champ!

Buffalo Technology DriveStation AV 1.0TB USB 2.0 External Multimedia Hard Drive with TurboPC HD-AV1.0TU2 Review

Buffalo Technology DriveStation AV 1.0TB USB 2.0 External Multimedia Hard Drive with TurboPC HD-AV1.0TU2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The other reviews aren't really providing any advice about the product itself so I'll take a shot at it. The Pros:
The hard drive is physically small. It's about 2 inches wider and half inch longer than a VHS tape (what's a VHS tape? Ask your parents). The 500GB hard drive that it's replacing was bigger and very loud when it was being used. This unit is also very quiet, it has a tiny fan installed to help keep it cool,(which is a good thing because it gets warm to the touch when running) but the fan can only really be heard when the drive is powering up or coming out of sleep mode. Otherwise it's virtually soundless.
The lights on the front of the unit look cool, the whole blue LED with glossy black plastic look matches my PS3 and my Dell and the lights also roughly indicate how much free space is left on the drive.
The drive also seems to be very stable. I've had it and have been using it every day for about 6 months now and have received no errors or read failures. The transfer speed on this thing is also pretty good.I've been using it to back up all of my mp3 files and DVD's and while it's not as fast as my external flash drive,it's not painstakingly slow either when you're backing up files only. The Cons:
I gave it 3 stars and not 4 because the first of all read/write/seek times are below average. If you are trying to put something on the hard drive while you're say in a different folder or deleting a file from anywhere else on the drive, or trying to play a song or watch a video that's on the drive it is slow. An external drive is usually slower than an internal drive but it's so bad on this drive that I only use it if I know I'll be backing up files ONLY, or only watching a movie, or listening to music. Basically it sucks at multitasking.
The last con is the software it comes with it. The program that changes the amount of time before the drive goes into sleep mode is simple to use and comes in handy. This is the program I use. All of the other programs installed are either rubbish or there are better programs out there to use intstead.
Turbo copy actually slowed down my file transfers, and when I tried turbo PC it resulted in my PC giving me strange read/write errors and occasionally freezing so I leave those two programs off all the time. it also comes with Notepad, explorer and paint(really Buffalo?) which have been preinstalled on all PCs since the beginning of time.

HDMI Cable - 2 Male Connectors - 2 Meters

I bought these cables as a last resort action to try and get my 2nd Generation Apple TV working. I kept getting a HDCP error. My TV was HDCP compatible so I tried replacing my existing HDMI cables with these.
Problem fixed. These are fully compatible with 2nd Gen Apple TV. They are good quality, heavy duty, and deliver a great picture.
I can't see any problems with the picture and that's when viewing it on a 50" 1080p plasma TV.
You can't beat the price either. I got two of these for less than half the price of one of Walmarts cheapest HDMI cables. They work a lot better too.

Sharkoon X-Tatic SP Gaming Headset Review

Sharkoon X-Tatic SP Gaming Headset
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When i started to shop around for a gaming headset, i mostly heard about two main brands: Turtle Beach and Triton. Many people say that you can't go wrong with either. But, while shopping around, I came across Sharkoon. There really isn't much online in regards to this headset, so i figured i would check out their higher-end headset. (The X-Tatic 5.1 with surround sound) This headset received fantastic reviews across the boards. I figured if the company made quality headsets, i would check out the x-tatic sp...even without any reviews online. And i am not disappointed.
What made me reluctant to go with the Turtle Beach PX21 headset is how it looked. It was not very sexy. The Triton AX-180 looked nice, but it was $80. Since the x-tatic sp was $10 cheaper, i figured i would check them out. Not only is the sound excellent and crisp, but the headset is extremely comfortable and is continuously comfortable for long periods of time (which is important for a gaming headset). My brother has the Triton AXPROs and he loved this headset. (for those of you who don't know, the AXPROs have surround sound and are the top of the line Tritons) Why spend more than double the money to get surround sound when you can get a great sounding headset at this price range? And, for those of you who doubt the price of a stereo gaming headset, it is totally worth the price. I have never used one before while gaming...and it makes a total difference. People aren't lying when they say they hear things they didn't hear before. Its true! When you run by trees/brush you hear the rustle as you run by. You hear footsteps. Gun fire and other sounds help you locate where the shots are being fired so you can find the enemy. Even without a 5.1 surround sound headset (which really only refers to the amount of speakers in the ear cup to produce that surround sound feeling) you hear the sounds as if you were in the middle of the action. Shooting games just feel like they were made to be played with a headset like this.
So, if you are in the market for a stereo gaming headset, i can't knock the Turtle Beachs or Tritons, but i can definitely say that these would not disappoint. Great sound quality and comfortability...all you need in a gaming headset!

12 FT Digital Audio Optical TOSLink Cable Optic 12ft Review

12 FT Digital Audio Optical TOSLink Cable Optic 12ft
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While this cable will indeed provide a path for photons to move as with any other optical cable, the connectors are very poorly made. I'm guessing that they don't meet the mechanical specs for toslink, as they don't hold themselves in the jacks as they are supposed to. I literally had to use tape on one of the connectors to keep it from falling out of the port under no more pressure than its own weight. Correctly designed toslink cables stay in the same jack just fine.
Conclusion: Don't spend $100 on an optical cable (since they all perform exactly the same as far as data is concerned,) but do get one with good connectors (which can be had at reasonable prices, but apparently not this low.) Of course, for any form of digital data, whether electronic (HDMI, DVI, etc.) or optical (toslink, fibrechannel, etc.,) there is no difference in signal quality as long as the data actually gets to the other end, so a medium-cheap cable will perform *exactly* the same as an expensive "high-end" cable, unless you are in an environment with an incredibly high amount of electromagnetic noise (at which point you shouldn't have your TV or receiver [or yourself] there anyway.)

Optical Splitter Review

Optical Splitter
Average Reviews:

I'm using this backwards from how it's made. Instead of using it to split one output into two, I'm splitting one input into two and it works fine. My receiver only had one optical input but I had two devices with optical outputs. Using this I now have both my XBox 360's optical output and my cable box's optical output going into the splitter and then one cable going from the splitter into my receivers single optical input. Some people told me this wouldn't work but I guessed that it would since it shouldn't make a difference which way the light is traveling. Much more convienient then buying one of those selector switch boxes and having to manually change the selection all the time.

Marantz SR8002 Surround Receiver Review

Marantz SR8002 Surround Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After 9 years, it was time to upgrade my former top-of-the-line Sony ES receiver (STR-DA 777ES) to take advantage of improved audio and high-definition video switching. After reading all the professional reviews, I settled on the Marantz SR8002. Three weeks after an extensive configuration and testing, I must say that I am pleased overall with my choice. However, several surprising configuration limitations keep me from giving it a full-on 5-star review.
Let me preface my review by stating that my home theater / audio configuration is on the higher-end of the scale: 3 KEF Reference speakers for the front 3 channels, Boston Acoustics rear surrounds and subwoofer, Sony ES SACD player (and yes, I have an SACD collection!), Bang & Olfusen turntable, Sony reference DVD player, AppleTV, Roku music server, JVC SVHS VCR, Mitsubishi HDTV monitor.
My first priority was in upgrading the audio quality, and I must say that in this respect, the Marantz SR8002 far exceeded my expectations. As a 7.1 channel amplifier, there are 7 x 125watt channels available, native decoding of the latest lossless HD digital audio on BluRay (DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD), Audyssey microphone and room equilazation, and THX Select 2 certification. For the ultimate audio experience, the Marantz SR8002 offers two "Pure Direct" modes - the first one bypasses the equalization and surround circuits, the second mode completely disables all video and display logic for even shorter audio output path. The SR8002 also provides a toroidal power transformer for extra headroom when needed, and in my setup the audio performance is dramatic.
I chose not to expand my current 5.1 speaker configuration to 7.1 channel. In this setup, the SR8002 gives you the option of taking the two unused channels and configuring them for a second amplified room/zone, or bi-amplification of your front speakers. I chose the latter, as my KEF Reference speakers support bi-amplified wiring, providing 250 watts per channel into Left and Right channels. Let me tell you - the pure stereo performance in this configuration will blow your socks off! Friends could not believe the sound in our fairly large family room was from 2-speakers only. And, the multi-channel modes (especially NEO6: Music) are quite outstanding even with a 2-channel source. Quite simply, the audio performance of the SR8002 is "7-star" on a 5-star scale.
My second priority was in upgrading to a receiver capable of decoding the high-resolution audio of BluRay, while providing high definition video switching (via HDMI and component). In this respect the receiver delivers, but with some surprising limitations. On paper, the Marantz SR8002 offers more connectors and options than you would ever need. You have 4 HDMI 1.3 connections + 2 HDMI 1.3 outputs (good!), 4 component HD connections + 2 component HD outputs (good!), 4 TOSlink digital audio (including front), 3 coax digital audio, and a plethora of S-video, composite video, and analog audio inputs.
But in reality, there are serious limitations...
First of all, it is inexcusable for a receiver of this cost to be missing a phonograph input. Yes, for $50 you can buy a phono preamp that gives you good performance and doesn't have the A/C hum of your $25 Radio Shack unit. But, come on.
Secondly, and more discouraging, despite the plethora of connections you only have 8 discrete settings that can be assigned. (The AM/FM tuner is another, nonassignable input, as is the optional XM radio input). This means that even if you could connect to all of the analog + digital inputs available you can only use 8 of them! This is quite a surprising and serious limitation. Even my Sony ES from 1999 had 12 discrete inputs!
The on-screen receiver setup lets you assign specific HDMI, component, and digital audio for your 8 choices. Each input can also be renamed. But you cannot use a single digital input for more than one setting. And you cannot reassign the analog video (S-Video/Composite) or analog audio inputs.
An example of this strange limitation is the analog input of the "AUX2" input also happens to be used as the Left and Right input channels for the 7.1 input. I had to reconfigure my setup to reassign the "AUX2" input to the digital CD input, which I also connected to the 5.1 (SACD) output from my CD player. Because there are only 8 input settings, I had to assign the "AUX1" (front) input to the digital audio and video inputs from my AppleTV. This means that the front AUX1 inputs are completely unusable, since all 8 inputs were assigned from rear input sources.
Another big surprise was the subwoofer speaker setting. By default, it is set to "mix"...all bass output is diverted to the subwoofer at an assignable crossover frequency. This works well for (and is recommended for) THX and multi-channel video sources. But strangely in "mix" setting, the SR8002 does NOT output the bass to the subwoofer for two-channel analog inputs AND it does not output the low frequencies to the front speakers. I spent about 3 hours trying to figure out why my new (required) phonograph preamp sounded so terrible before I discovered this problem. Setting the subwoofer to "BOTH" properly sends full-range audio to the front speakers. AND, it enables the subwoofer for the simulated modes such as NEO6. Not only does this not make sense, it is not documented anywhere in the manual.
There are other annoyances:
- FM / AM radio reception is below average. I was looking forward to trying the "HD radio" capability, but the tuner reception is so bad that it can never get a strong enough signal to use any of the HD radio broadcasts in my area. Compared with my 1999 Sony ES receiver using the same antenna configuration I can only tune half of the stations. My CLOCK RADIO gets much better radio reception than this $2000 receiver!
- the front of the receiver has two large controls for Source and Volume - each one has a bright blue LED indicator that does NOT move with the control. So, while you might think that the volume indicator would indicate the volume level it doesn't. The bright blue indicators are always at 12-o clock position. And the front input control does not have a positive feedback to let you know you have switched inputs.
- the remote control button/display backlight is ONLY activated when you press one of the two buttons on the bottom of the remote
- the remote does not offer discrete settings for all surround modes or settings (although thankfully there are discrete power on/off codes)
- the onscreen display is very primitive (think 1982 Apple ][+ 40x24 characters)
In summary, despite the outstanding audio performance of the Marantz SR8002 (once you figure out the subwoofer and other settings!), I cannot give this a full 5-star rating because of the serious limitations and limited inputs.

Thermaltake Mobile Fan II External USB Cooling Fan - Us

I house my PC inside a 15" wide base cabinet below the workspace in my basement-level office. I have to keep the cabinet door closed (locked actually) to keep the children from turning the unit off and on. Unfortunately, the inside of the cabinet gets pretty hot from the PC due to the lack of circulation. I needed an inexpensive, convenient, and safe way to keep the cabinet cool. I purchased the Thermaltake Desktop USB Cooling Fan, cut a 3.5" square opening on the side of the cabinet, and installed the fan facing out of the openning to draw the warm air out. This solution worked perfectly! I can adjust the Thermaltake fan speed up if I'm running CPU intensive applications - like games or watching a DVD - to draw more air. The fan is very quite - unnoticable really, and the fan grill keeps little fingers from touching the fan blade. I would highly recommend this product.

Denon AVR1610 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver with 1080p HDMI Connectivity Review

Denon AVR1610 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver with 1080p HDMI Connectivity
Average Reviews:

Based on a sub-$400 budget, I focused on this and the Yamaha 465. In researching it, a toss-up really emerged and the decision was made in talking to a very knowledgeable guy at Crutchfield. Having set it up last night and having played with it the better part of today, I am very content with my purchase. I fired up some Blu Ray's with both PCM and DTS-MA/ True HD and was very pleased with the upgrade over standard DD/DTS. The soundstage was just bigger. The opening scene from my kids favorite movie, Cars, was no longer weak. The opening race scene was clear and appropriately loud. The bump on my stars comes from the fact that the manual is awful. I gave up on it early on and went with the trial and error approach with the on-screen menu, which is more than adequate, but you need to have a basic tech sense in order to take that route. On another set-up note, the microphone setup is well done and made a big difference in the sound generated from my SS speakers, before versus after.

Onkyo TX-NR708 7.2-Channel Network Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

Onkyo TX-NR708 7.2-Channel Network Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Synopsis: The TX-NR708 is a great value in this price range. It has THX Select 2, three 7.2 sound fields; they include 7.2 discrete HD/EX, Dolby z, and Audyssey DSX wide. There are connections for up to 11 speakers (excluding the 2 subs. Note that the 7.2 specification means that there are 2 preamp outs for 2 powered subwoofers). There are more than 50 listening modes to obtain the perfect sound for your room and source. For video processing, there are a total of 7 HDMI inputs (along with 2 component, 4 S-Video, and 5 composite inputs) 6 in the back, 1 in the front. Digital audio inputs: 3 coax and 2 optical. The remote is easy to use and setup for your other components. Menus are relatively straight forward, though there is a learning curve, depending on complexity of your particular setup. This receiver also has network connectivity with Upnp, and a webpage interface, making it simple to change fields without your remote, enhancing the TX-NR708 network's usability. With the release of future firmware updates, one can envision Onkyo adding features that will keep your home theater cutting edge. The power rating is 110 watts per channel, 8 ohm, @ .08% harmonic distortion, providing this receiver with enough power and clean sound for a small to medium sized room.
Setup
If you have all HDMI inputs, setting up the TX-NR708 is a breeze, given you already have your speaker wires run, of course. The binding posts are high quality and have a smooth feeling and, unlike some other receivers, it's easy to tell when the wires are secured. Since this receiver has binding posts for 11 speakers, connecting the speakers would have been confusing if I had not first researched the new Audyssey DSX and Dolby z sound enhancements, which are simply awesome in my view (more on that later). The drawback is that you need 4 more speakers to enjoy them. I extended wires and labeled them for testing later. If you do this make sure that you do not allow the wires to short. Tape them until you are ready to connect your speakers.
My setup, speaker wise, is nothing special. I use 2 large generic 3-way speakers, placed on either side of a 6' entertainment center for my fronts (not sure who makes them, but they have good balance and frequency response). A Polk CSi3 center channel sits above my 50" LG plasma TV. I advise you not to skimp on the front and center speakers. For surrounds and Audyssey DSX wides, two pairs of Sony SS-B1000 speakers serve nicely. For the heights, I thought I'd try a pair of Pyramid 4080 budget speakers, with wall mounts included. It was a perfect solution for the z channels, and they go down to a solid 100 Hz after being broken in. A BIC America V-1220 12-Inch powered sub provides all the low end punch I'll ever need. Placement for the `wide' and the `high' speakers can be tricky. Perfect placement (according to this diagram: [...] is generally not an option. From the diagram I mathematically calculated placement for my room, and was able to place them pretty close to where their sweet spots were supposed to be. The heights (Dolby z speakers) are about 5 feet above and 3 feet wide of my fronts, while the wide speakers (Audyssey DSX) are placed at ear level, about 4 and a half feet toward the center of the room away and 3 feet wide of the fronts.
Listening and Watching
The first thing I noticed when I powered up the receiver was an improvement in my satellite TV picture, especially in the text at the top of the screen. Next, I ran the Audyssey speaker setup and it balanced out all the disparate speakers perfectly into a seamless sound field. I popped in "The Transporter" movie (DVD), and tested the new sound fields. They were both awesome. "IP Man" is a good movie to test the z channels, as well, especially the final fight scene. The Dolby z field makes your room seem bigger than it actually is, expanding the front sound stage, while the Audyssey DSX field seems to bring the front action closer to you with more detail. At least that is the best way I can describe it. No doubt others will describe their sound experience differently with respect to these new fields. Whatever the case, these new sound dimensions provide a definite enhancement, in my view. And the discrete 7-channel DTS-HD Master in "Shoot `Em Up" does justice to that new Blu-ray sound format, as does "Hellboy II: The Golden Army."
The Dolby z field works well with THX and gives you a lot of versatility when it comes to sound conditioning. Perhaps in a future firmware update, Onkyo will allow you to put the z and width channels together, like they already do with some of their high end receivers. If so, one might expect a net reduction in the power output, since more speakers will be running at once, and the power will have to be divided between them; thus, it would be equivalent to 9.2 or even 11.2 surround sound coming in the form of new listening modes.
Even though I only listened to Winamp radio and network radio, the sound quality was superb. I listen to jazz mostly, so I cannot comment on rock or other genres. Additionally, one would expect the sound quality of CD's and higher quality input sources to be even better.
Ease of Setup: Menus.
For the most part, I found the TX-NR708 menus to be pretty straight forward. I had no problem assigning components to my inputs of choice, with one exception. That exception being the sound input for an HDMI source when it does not come from the HDMI connector. For some reason the TX-NR708 does not let you do it from their main I/O Assign menu; you can only do it by using the "home' button on the remote while in that particular source mode. This might be necessary, for example, if you want to use computer motherboard digital coax sound with your HDMI video card output. Since Audyssey did such a good job setting up my speakers, I did not need to change any of those settings. Keep in mind that the Sub crossover frequency is set automatically in accordance with the rest of your speakers. You can, however, adjust the LFE crossover setting manually if you want. There are menus for THX and other sound conditioning (such as Audyssey EQ and Dynamic Volume), as well, and you'll need to experiment with those to find out what best suits your particular listening preferences. There is also a menu for programming your remote, eliminating the need to reference a manual for a code list.
Remote Control
The remote control that comes with the TX-NR708 is very good. The buttons are well organized and, unlike my last receiver, it is the only one I need for the basic listening functions of all my components. Programming this remote for other components, such as your TV, satellite/cable, and Blu-ray player is made simple by an onscreen menu. And once you're all set up, the pre-programmed macro buttons simplify operation even more. Moreover, this remote is a great improvement over the one that came with my Dish Network receiver; the TX-NR708 remote is more powerful than the Dish remote, eliminating the need to aim and press a button multiple times to get the receiver to respond.
Network
The network features that come with this receiver are sweet. Being a computer technician by trade, I appreciate the added functionality. Most users probably will use the default DHCP setting for assigning IP addresses, but you have the option to set them manually as well. Be aware that it is a wired connection, so you'll need an access point, or a bridged computer and a switch to make use of it, unless you already have an available network cable wired to your entertainment center. In many cases, the v-tuner feature will make it unnecessary to use an external FM antenna to listen to local stations. Add Pandora, audio streaming from your computer, and other services, and you have just about everything you could ever want from a network connection for playing music. One thing I really love is the web page interface for accessing network fields on the TX-NR708. This makes it easy to change network settings via a computer keyboard, rather than the remote, which can make setup much quicker and simpler.
Heat and Power Consumption
The receiver runs cooler than any other receiver I have ever owned. Nevertheless, I placed a small 12V computer fan atop for additional cooling. With that extra small fan my TX-NR708 runs as cool as a cucumber. One thing I did notice, though, is that the receiver stays warm, even when turned off, or when in the standby mode, indicating that it is consuming power (probably because the network is still active in the standby mode). So in order to conserve energy, I have it plugged in to a surge protector strip along with my TV, and turn them both off at night.
Summary
I believe you would be hard-pressed to find a better receiver at this price anywhere. It is packed with features that even many higher priced receivers do not have. Whether you like listening to music or watching movies, the TX-NR708 has most everything the home theater owner will ever need--and then some. I highly recommend it and give it a solid 4.5 stars.
