(More customer reviews)I purchased the PHD-8VX before it became available through Amazon. I have a Samsung 50" DLP monitor that I purchased in 2006. Since it had no built-in receiver I purchased a Samsung HD set top box for local channels (I cannot get cable at my location and satellite reception is impractical due to tree coverage). After 5 years the Samsung STB became unserviceable and a new STB was needed. I purchased a ePVision PHD-205 but the signal was not as clear as the Samsung receiver, so I returned it and upgraded to the PHD-8VX and have been pleased with the reception, picture quality, versatility and ease of use. The initial scan required about 5 minutes and I now receive all the Atlanta area channels that are available and a few from Chattanooga, TN using an outside antenna I purchased from Lowe's in conjunction with a signal amp from Radio Shack. Those channels I did not want to view were easily de-selected and can be added at a later date if I so choose without re-scanning. I can adjust the picture through the STB for each input (DVD, etc.) or use the pre-set picture modes. The sound is phenomenal both through my stereo system and the monitor itself. The PHD-8VX also allows the user to tailor the sound and I have decreased the use of the stereo because the PHD-8VX delivers clear, crisp high-fidelity sound. There is only one HDMI output but there are three HDMI inputs. The 8VX allow easy switching among the inputs (DVD, etc.) through the remote rather than relying on the Samsung DLP monitor, which has only one HDMI input. One of the reasons I bought the 8VX was for its switching capabilities. The remote is responsive and relatively sturdy; no more or less than other remotes I have used. It allows the user to freeze, zoom in and zoom out of the picture. I am very pleased with the HD aspect ratio adjustment which was needed for my particular application. Finally, the package included an HDMI cable obviating the need for an additional purchase. The only shortcoming is boot-up time which can take as much as 2 minutes. I did discover that if left on a channel with a strong signal the boot-uptime is generally around 30 seconds. This is a great receiver for either primary use or for a secondary input. The color depth puts my late Samsung STB to shame. Live sports events, from NASCAR to NFL, are vivid and life-like. I unhesitatingly recommend this product.
